Honey, I Joined a Cult

As soon as I saw the first trailer for Honey, I Joined a Cult I knew that this was a game for me. As of writing, this is an early access game so not all of the features are fully implemented just yet. Still, they do have a pretty detailed map of how they want the game to progress and as I am so into this game, I thought it would be fun to take a closer look at it and try to get some more people excited about it.

Your Cult, Your Way

Think of games like Prison Architect and you have a good idea of what to expect from Honey, I Joined a Cult. You need to build your cult from the ground up. This starts by coming up with a cool name for your cult. You then need to decide what kind of relic your cultists are going to worship, pick a uniform, and also a very cool hat that will make you stand out.

If You Build It, They Will Worship

There is a pretty big base building aspect to this game that is a great deal of fun and more levels of customization will come to the game as it progresses through development. What I like about the base building here is that it is all “cult” released. So, you will be building stuff like spirit chambers, polygraph rooms, and more to make sure that things are running as smoothly as can be.

Who Said Being A Cult Leader Was Easy!

This is a management style game and Honey, I Joined a Cult is far deeper than the fun art style and funky music suggest! You have a great deal of things to keep an eye on to make sure that your cult is always growing and that you are raking in that sweet cult money. You need to make sure that your cultists' physical and mental wellbeing is being met. You need to give them tasks, send them out on missions, try to get new members, and so on. If a cultist is unhappy, they may want to leave and that is the last thing you want. People are a resource and the more you have the more you can do, the more you can grow your cult, and the more money you are going to make.

Come On Down To Cult Park!

The presentation of Honey, I Joined a Cult is great, I get a kind of South Park vibe from the way that the little characters look and move around and the whole game has a very fun sense of humor to it all.

I really like how bright and “groovy” everything is and the funky music helps tie it all together. They have done a great job in trying to make things seem like a 60s or 70s cult that you see in a movie and I think that is a lot of fun.

As far as management games go, I have to say that Honey, I Joined a Cult has one of the most fun premises that I have seen in a very long time. I love the whole idea of what they have going on here and the sense of humor is awesome. Still, with that being said, this is a very deep management game so it will require a lot of work and time to truly get into it. I am not worried about that though as it seems like it will be time very well spent!

Pros:

  • The idea of running a cult is a lot of fun
  • The way you design your cult is awesome
  • The presentation has a ton of charm to it
  • It has far deeper management mechanics than you would think

Cons:

  • The fun art style may throw some people off in regards to the learning curve
  • The game is missing a lot of features in this early access launch
