Video games based on comic books today are quite common, but many of them fail to nail the comic book aesthetic quite properly. One game that looks like it might finally break the cycle here, though, is Hellboy Web of Wyrd. This upcoming release for all major consoles and PC looks set to help bring together a properly invigorating comic book style game.

If you are a fan of third person beat-em-up games that have some roguelike elements, then there is absolutely something to be enjoyed within the world of Hellboy Web of Wyrd. How, though, is Upstream Arcade’s game going to actually play? Let’s look at what we know so far.

Intriguing Beat-em-up Action In A New Environment

For anyone who has enjoyed the Hellboy media out there – other games, comics, movies etc. – there is something immediately appealing about Hellboy Web of Wyrd. It looks like a comic book for a start, with a very strong shading style that makes everything look like you are walking in amongst the pages o an actual comic book. On top of that, the combat retains interesting camera angles and styles to ensure even generic fights with basic enemies will carry a flashy style.

There are some very intriguing features and ideas included within Hellboy Web of Wyrd. Some elements feel like they are taken from games like Dark Souls, while some of the Roguelike elements might put it more in line with something like Hades. Paired to a very interesting world and setting, and there is something very exciting about what Hellboy Web of Wyrd looks to be bringing to the table.

A polished art style paired with a very intriguing combat system looks like it could be a very enjoyable combination indeed.

An Exciting New Adventure For Hellboy (8/10)

Add in the general style of the game and the fluid nature of the combat, and it’s easy to see why there is so much hype around this particular release. The combat looks smooth, while the hits look extremely dense. Combat looks and feels like it will be one of the primary features of the game, so it has to be smooth and responsive. From what we have seen so far, it certainly fits this bill.

The Hellboy series does have a bit of a habit of the games based on the world to have a rather uninteresting story, though, so that is what Hellboy Web of Wyrd has to try and avoid. The premise seems interesting enough, though, though there is not enough known about the full plot to say for certain that it will hold up beyond simply being an interesting idea.

• Combat looks un and fluid, with plenty of opportunities for combos
• Enemy variety looks great, avoiding repetition when it comes to fighting

• Not enough detail about the plot so far – can it retain an interesting pace throughout?
