Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom

Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom is a game that not a lot of people have heard about and a game that even fewer people have played. Released back in 2010 for the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, this was a bit of a budget title when it came out. It was pretty much overlooked by everyone, but I picked it up on a whim and it became a game that I championed real hard to get more people to give it a try.

It Is Always Darkness

The plot of the game is like something out of a fairy tale or even some kind of fantasy novel/movie. The kingdom was once a great place to thrive and people thrived here, but a Darkness overtook it one day and people started going missing. A young thief called Tepeu sets out to find a mythical and magical beast called the Majin to try and fight back The Darkness once and for all.

Two Heads Are Better Than One

The gameplay of Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom is what I like best about the game. This is a single-player co-op game. By that I mean you take control of Tepeu, but you also have Majin accompanying you for large parts of the game. You never take direct control of him, but you can give him many different commands such as attack, follow, heal, and so on. He can learn new magical abilities as you play and these are not just used for fighting, but for puzzles as well.

The game mixes combat and puzzles quite well. Sometimes the pair are separated and you have to play more in a stealth manner as Tepeu does not have the strength Majin does. You have to frequently team up to get past not just puzzles, but enemies and bosses too. It is actually a lot of fun and you even level up, learn new abilities, and have to backtrack to areas once you get new abilities to get into previously locked areas.

The Colors Of The World

For what was sold as a budget game, Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom looks pretty damn good. It may be lacking in the finer details you would expect in a AAA title like a Red Dead Redemption for example. However, the fantasy setting is done quite well and I liked the variety of the areas you will be in. You can be in a dark castle-like area and then a bright green forest.

I thought the character models, especially Majin were a lot of fun. The sound in the game is decent. The soundtrack is very fitting to the tone of the story and the game is fully voice acted. The voice acting is kind of all over the place. I feel that Tepeu is great and Majin is not bad either, but some of the other voices you hear can be a tad too “animated” if you know what I am saying.

8.5

I recently went back and played this for the first time in close to a decade and I feel that it holds up pretty well. It is not a very long game and I am not sure you would play it again straight after you have beaten it. However, if you are looking for a game that is a little more unknown, but still a fun time. Well, you can do a hell of a lot worse than Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom.

Pros:

  • I thought the story had a lot of charm to it
  • I liked the way you could give Majin commands
  • The gameplay has a lot of variety to it
  • The main two characters have solid voice acting

Cons:

  • The game may be a tad rough around the edges
  • Some of the voice acting is not the best
