Can you talk about helicopter games without shouting “GET TO THE CHOPPER” at least once? We do not think so! Anyway, there have been some awesome games that let you pilot a badass helicopter dating all the way back to the arcades in the 80s! We have put together an amazing selection of games that let you blow stuff up while taking the controls of a helicopter and today we are sharing with you just a few of the highlights!

The Strike series from EA is probably what most people think of when the subject of helicopter games is brought up! You would have to say that the first two Desert Strike and Jungle Strike are probably the most iconic of the series. They feature great action, but there is also a fair bit of brainpower required here too. These games were also released on pretty much anything that could play a video game back in the day too which is pretty cool. Some of the later games in the series such as Urban Strike are kind of interesting too. While, you still pilot a helicopter here, there are also some on foot sections too which are pretty interesting.

If you want to check out an arcade classic when it comes to helicopter games then take a look at Super Thunder Blade which was also ported to the Sega Mega Drive. Ok, so this may be a tad on the choppy side (choppy, a great unintended pun!) however, it still has some real charm and it was a pretty early hit for Sega’s 16-bit powerhouse. Another fun 16-bit shooter from the Sega Genesis/Sega Mega Drive is Red Zone which is actually a bit of a hidden gem and a game not too many people talk about. However, if you want to blow stuff up and feel badass while piloting a helicopter it is well worth checking out.

It was not just the 16-bt era that had it going on when it came to helicopter games. The NES had some fantastic games that let you take to the air in a helicopter. Probably the most famous one is the action-packed, fun, and challenging arcade style shooter, Tiger-Heli which is a game that pretty much everyone had back in the day. This lets you fly a stealth jetcopter that has some amazing firepower. Another fun 8-bit NES game worth checking out is Twin Cobra which is here on this helicopter games list, but this has a great deal in common with the classic arcade vertical shooters of the late 80s. It offers amazing powerups, tough boss battles, and a whole lot of action. It is tough as nails, but so rewarding when you figure it all out. It is also worth noting that if you like the NES version, there is also a version for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis which kicks things up a notch!

As you can see, you have a great selection of helicopter games to check out here. Blasting stuff away while taking the controls of a helicopter is something that will never not be cool! Go for the high score, complete the mission, or just have fun shooting stuff as that is what games like these are all about!
