An exciting glance at what’s to come in the future of one of the very best racing sims available, Gran Turismo 4 Prologue is much more than a simple demo. This sneak peek at the full Gran Turismo experience is perfect for new fans who want to get a taste of what racing in this game is like.

While the game might be just an appetizer for the full meal that is Gran Turismo 4, don’t discard Prologue just yet. There’s a surprising amount of things to see and do in this demonstration, including a closer look at the high-quality car models and a taste of the full game’s excellent Driving School.

More than a Demo

In the game industry, distributing a demo is a surefire way to build hype among fans. Sure, magazine articles and trailers can give players a taste of what your game has to offer, but what Polyphony Digital has done with Gran Turismo 4 Prologue might be the most impressive demo we’ve ever seen.

With 48 cars and 5 race tracks, this “prologue” could be a novel of its own. For a realistic driving sim, that’s a healthy collection of vehicles and tracks, especially considering that games like Need for Speed Underground have just 20 cars to choose from.

Improved UI

As soon as you get into the game’s main menu, you’ll notice that Polyphony has made an impressive job streamlining the overall presentation of every menu in the game. Navigating through the menus is now more intuitive than in previous entries – a much-needed improvement, considering the vast amount of visual and recording options available to players.

However, there’s one setting that seems missing from the show, and that is the in-depth mechanics and customization that we saw in the first Gran Turismo titles. Considering that this is a deep racing sim, powerful mechanic customization is a must. Here’s hoping that the option becomes available in the full version of the game.

Rally and Circuits

Polyphony Digital has proved time and time again their absolute mastery over Sony’s hardware. Each Gran Turismo game is a graphics powerhouse, putting consoles to the test. Gran Turismo 4 Prologue continues this tradition with its impressive vehicle models and breathtaking race tracks.

Rally races might be somewhat new to the series, but Prologue proves that Gran Turismo has already mastered the formula. One of the tracks included in Prologue is Grand Canyon, and it might just be one of the most awe-inspiring tracks we’ve seen in the franchise. Crowds of sprites cheer players from the crowd, making each track feel alive.

Improvements have been made to the game’s physics system. While there was a tendency to slip at almost any speed in Gran Turismo 3, cars feel heavier and more satisfying to control in Prologue. Rally racing, with its uneven terrain, also feels much more solid than before, with all the difficulties that come with rocky terrain recreated in painstaking detail.

When it comes to car models, what Polyphony achieved on the PS2 is praiseworthy, to say the least. Reflections look amazing, even if they’re not made in real-time, and the replays might just be some of the best visuals we’ve seen in any PS2 title to date.
