Although Capcom's Goof Troop is not a showcase Disney game, it does contain some surprises. Its light game play and Goofy graphics make it perfect for new gamers.
Up on the Goof
Goof Troop is a one- or two-player (simultaneous), 3D overhead-view action/adventure game that so closely resembles Legend of Zelda for the SNES you'll expect to see Gannon, not Keelhaul Pete, at the end. It's not nearly as fun as Zelda, unfortunately. In fact, during the simultaneous game play you sometimes find yourself on another screen because your partner has travelled onto the next screen, which automatically pulls you over with him. It can get... well... kinda Goofy after awhile.
Keelhaul Pete is up to his old pirating pranks, except this time he's crossed paths with the Goofinator. Goofy and his son Max, along with some friends, were hauling along on the open ocean, fishing, and having some fun, when Keelhaul Pete kidnapped some of the crew. Now it's up to Goofy and Max to rescue them.
ProTip: Position yourself to the left of the second stage's pesky cannon, and constantly move around. Otherwise, you'll find the cannonball express heading straight towards you.
You'll travel across five stages, including Pirate Island, Keelhaul's ship, and a castle fortress. These strongholds are guarded by the craftiest of henchmen, such as pirates who bellow fire, throw bombs, and fling cutlasses at you. What's a gallant Goofy to do? Well, for starters, you can pick up and throw almost anything. You can also kick blocks into enemies. Along the way, you'll find items that will enable you to scale pits, cross broken bridges, and light dark passages.
- To quench the Stage Two Boss's fire, stay to his left or right and keep your hands raised. His henchmen will launch barrels at you, which you can catch and toss back at the boss.
- Remember, you want this door to O-P-E-N.
Most of the time, you simply try to stay out of harm's way. You can do this by opening doors -- some require keys, some require brainteasing puzzle prowess, and some you trigger by wasting all the enemies on the screen. Sometimes, it takes a combination of all three. It sounds intimidating, but even the Goofiest gamers can master the easy controls, plus there are tons of 1-ups on hand.
Goof Troop's cartoon graphics are pretty good, but not great. The animation is clean and fast, giving an all-out action pace to the game. The colors are bright and fun, and the bosses, although by no means screen- busters, are well animated.
- With the grappling hook you can stun some enemies and knock others backwards into pits or into water.
The quasi-reggae soundtrack is cool, so don't turn the volume down. It's not great enough to make you want the CD, though. The game could've used some Goofy voice-overs, for sure.
The Goof Will Set You Free
This game is not easy by any means. With some adult guidance, however, even the youngest gamers will enjoy it. Experienced gamers beware! You'll think vou can bust Goof in no time, but Dme of the puzzles are harder than they look. ..'s a lot like Goofy himself... not good to look at, but a key player nonetheless.

Goof Troop is a fun action/adventure game that will entice almost any player. Goofy has an assortment of wacky animations. The puzzles, strewn throughout the game, are not too tough - nor are they too easy. A welcome challenge that works particularly well. Goof Troop works very well when it is two-player simultaneous. It can be a bit repetitive after a while, however. Overall it's a fun game with all around good features.
Goof Troop is a fun game, but it falls short in a couple of areas. First of all, I can't stand games that have beaten enemies reappear when you enter the room again. Also, the game is just too easy! It seems strongly geared toward the younger playing audience. Veteran gamers should have no problem clearing many of the levels. I think it's a terrific game that looks and feels exactly like Zelda: A Link to the Past.
Not since Zelda: A Link to the Past have I played an action/adventure game this good. The play mechanics and overhead view are reminiscent of Zelda, but the theme and story are truly Dysney. There are plenty of cool scenes to find, with little tasks and puzzles to keep it interesting. The music is upbeat and whimsical. Goofy his son, Max, and other Disney characters are hilarious to watch! It's fun!
I'm generally not into this kiddie type of stuff, but I must admit that Goof Troop is a fun puzzle game to play. Surprisingly, the later levels get quite challenging. This game requires enough skill and brains to keep you busy, plus it keeps you coming back for more. The look and sounds are pure Disney. Cute cartoon-like characters and tools will appeal to kids, but the puzzle challenges will I keep the older crowd going. Try it!
