Gloomwood

As we approach the release of Gloomwood, a stealth horror game with a classic Victorian feel, hype has been growing with each new video release. The game developers have been great about sharing information about this new game, and the more we know, the more we’re ready to play it.

In Gloomwood, you are an assassin who is trying to survive against all odds. You have quite the arsenal of weapons to help you, including an old-fashioned gun that sounds like a mini-cannon when it goes off (and draws everyone nearby to see what happened) and a stealthy but much more close-range cane-sword.

Similar to an iconic game of the past

If you played the dazzling game Thief: The Dark Project and saw some similarities, you’re not alone. In fact when the developers of Gloomwood reserved their domain, they chose “Thiefwithguns.com” essentially describing their own game as another version of Thief.

At first glance, Gloomwood and Thief have a lot of similarities. The game has similar looks, a similar feel to the demo game, and there’s even talks from the developers at getting the same voice actors involved despite the 18 year gap between the two games.

To say they are the same however isn’t quite true. Thief was all about sneaking through the night and avoiding getting caught, where Gloomwood doesn’t care how you get the job done, as long as it is done. Where a shatteringly loud shot from your gun is ugly but not world-ending in Gloomwood, it would spell the end of the game in Thief. This is the key difference between the two games, and while they are very similar, they really aren’t the same.

A fun horror

Gloomwood has a variety of options that make the game a world of fun to play. The game’s save points are phonographs, adding to the Victorian look and feel. The game also lets you choose between stealth and speed in several different ways. Players can hold the shift key down to walk instead of run, helping to make them quieter. Doors can be opened quickly and noisily, or slowly and quietly. You can quietly stab someone in the back, or come in guns blazing.

Although your gun is available, the developer does a good job of balancing it against the other weapons. Ammo is limited and difficult to load. It’s also loud and brings everyone running. You can use it, but you better be prepared for the fall out.

This game is difficult to rate because it isn’t out yet, apart from the demo. The demo had some issues with the AI being a little dumber than necessary, but this is just a demo—it’s not representative of the full game.

Much of what we have seen suggests this will be an exciting game to play, and that it will certainly grow from this demo into a fun game Thief players will love to get their hands on.

Pros:

  • Well thought out gameplay
  • Balanced weaponry
  • Decent graphics

Cons:

  • AI isn’t the brightest right now
