Dusk '82

Dusk '82 is a game that came out of nowhere for me! I loved the original of this and when I heard that they were working on an old school “demake” of the game, I knew it was something that I had to check out. There are certainly a ton of great games coming out in 2021, but I do think this one has the potential to slip through the cracks so I am trying to get as many people’s eyes on it as possible.

Them Bad Old Country Boys

The original Dusk was not exactly what you would call a story masterpiece, that game itself was already supposed to be a “retro” game. Still, the whole story of a guy being stuck in a backwoods place where there are a bunch of crazy cultists was something that I thought was cool. Dusk '82 has the same kind of premise where you are just trying to fight for survival against these cultists.

No Joking Around

This game I am pretty sure started out as some kind of April Fools Day joke and I salute the team for that. The original game had a kind of 90s vibe going on, but for Dusk '82 they have gone back even further than that. The visuals here are like the kind of thing you would have seen on the school computer when they wheeled it in at some point in the 80s if you were lucky enough to get computer time.

It has a very classic style and I think that it is just fantastic. It has a very old school kind of vibe and it is done in a way that many other games do not bother to do. You can put your own music, podcasts, or even memes as the game says into the game if you want and that is pretty cool.

Planning Makes Perfect!

The gameplay of Dusk '82 is a top-down kind of style and it is the kind of thing that at first looks very easy and basic. You move your little guy around the level, avoiding hazards and projectiles. You can get items that you can use and you will probably be surprised at just how tricky the game is. The enemies only move when you do, so you have to think about what you are doing or you can get yourself into a difficult situation.

Making The Game Yourself

There is a level maker option in the game and that is pretty cool. You are able to create levels in a very simplistic way, it is kind of like a tile system. Actually, it reminds me of the way you make levels in Super Mario Maker, but in a 2D style of course. It is very easy to do and you can share your levels with other people and in turn, you can try your hand at some of the levels other people have made.

Look, I get that a game like Dusk '82 is not going to be for everyone. For those that played the original Dusk and got a kick out of how that was a throwback will really love what they have done here. If the original Dusk is like Wolfenstein 3D, then Dusk '82 is like the original Castle Wolfenstein if that makes sense. I think this is really cool and well worth checking out.

Pros:

  • I love the way this game started out as a joke
  • It really does remind me of the original Wolfenstein
  • The retro presentation is awesome
  • The way you can make and share levels is cool

Cons:

  • I do think this is something of an acquired taste
  • Just release the game already!
