If you are a fan of Dragon Ball, then one thing that you need to look into is the litany of intriguing games. The Dragon Ball IP has been home to many quality games over the years, ranging from classic competitive fighters like Dragon Ball FighterZ to highly enjoyable game series like the Budokai series and beyond. However, one release that did not get much credit at the time was Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission.

This card-based fighter was release for 3DS in 2013, and while it might not be too memorable it was a good addition to the Dragon Ball games collection. Is it worth trying out today, though? Or might you find more fun in other card battlers?

An interesting card-based take on the Dragon Ball formula

While many card-based fighting games have come to the fore since the likes of Slay The Spire made them so beloved, Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission was an interesting take on the formula itself. This is a portable take on Dragon Ball Heroes, a very well-received arcade game. The use of the card-based function adds something quite different to the overall gameplay loop.

One thing to note is that this title done a good job of including heroes from all of the Dragon Ball IPs, including the movies. This means that fighting the likes of Janemba and Hildegarn are possible; many of the big titles in the games do not allow this.

With over 200 characters and close to 1000 cards to collect, too, there was much to do in this game. The general gameplay loop itself was built around the concept of fighting through a whole host of different battles and characters from Dragon Ball Z and GT.

By using the same interface as the Dragon Ball Heroes game, except this time played by using the touch screen, players put five cards into a lot and fight the battle using these card formations. Think of it was a rather simplistic and general take on something like Gwent.

Generic card battler in an interesting team builder (6/10)

The main thing to note about this game is that your primary intention is to build up a large collection of cards. With the aforementioned 900+ you have lots to choose form. This means that you can pick up all manner of famous heroes and then work your way through the story going from the Saiyan Saga all the way through Dragon Ball GT.

This means you get to play through the most important moments in the series, but it also means doing so through the rather bland and generic combat system. The more cards you get the more fun it can become, but the fundamentals of the battle system never really change or improve. With that in mind, some might find the Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission gameplay loop a little dull. For Dragon Ball fans, though, there is more than enough here to keep you interested if you enjoy card battlers.
