If you're still going ape over Donkey Kong Country, you'll be surprised by Donkey Kong Land, the Game Boy version of the 16-bit hit. Regardless of reductions in scope and cutbacks on technical aspects, DKL has excellent character sprites that really come alive, huge levels, and a tough challenge that means you won't complete this cart in one sitting.
Law of the Wild
The rules are simple: Start as Donkey Kong, but if you find a barrel labeled "DK," you can break it open and find Diddy Kong. You don't play with both characters on the screen at the same time, however. Instead, you toggle between the two by pressing Select.
You can also use barrels to dispense with bees and other enemies that you can't defeat with jumping attacks. If you get hit, you revert to your alter ego. Take a hit after that, and it's all over.
With selectable colors, this game is made more for the Super Game Boy than the monochrome Game Boy. The green-and-white Game Boy monitor just doesn't do this game justice. The sound is tinny and benign with subdued effects and a subtle music score.
The difficulty was cranked up on this cart. Some later stages require painstakingly careful movements. One false move, and you could lose a hit or an entire life. With such strong gameplay and graphics, Donkey Kong Land is a formidable effort considering what it accomplishes on a portable system.
- When you find a barrel, cany it around and throw It at bees and other tough enemies.
- At the main map, you can return to completed levels and search for more hidden bananas and power-ups.

Can this really be a Game Boy game? I was impressed with the conversion of this game to the Game Boy system. It looks good and plays well, making it an enjoyable experience.
Although the game is basically Donkey Kong Country, it is filled with new characters and awesome levels, including new water levels and a pirate ship.
The only thing missing from this game are the 3-D rendered characters. Other than that, I have no complaints.
WILL YOU LIKE IT?
Donkey Kong Country fans will definitely enjoy this version. As far as Game Boy games go, this is one of the best I have seen. The added levels and nasties you run into really make it exciting. The same kinds of challenges are offered in Donkey Kong Land as were offered in Donkey Kong Country. Get ready to go ape for this game!
Donkey Kong's coming to the Super Game Boy in an action/adventure cart that utilizes the same Alias Research technology as Donkey Kong Country. The cart stars Donkey Kong and his faithful sidekick, Diddy Kong, in a hop-n-bop romp against a crew of alligators called the Evil Kremlings.
What does a $50,000 ultra high-tech graphics workstation have in common with an obsolete black-and-white $49 contraption? Donkey Kong Land, of course! Okay, maybe the good ol' Game Boy isn't obsolete yet, and DK Land proves it with the best graphics ever for the GB. Created using the same Silicon Graphics workstations by the same people who did DK's SNB big brother, Land is almost as cool as Country. Massive sprites (so big it's almost hard to see where you're going) complement the 30 new levels and the Super Game Boy-optimized pix. Beat the Kremlings and don't forget to share the bananas with Diddy!
