Digimon All-Star Rumble is a fighting game based on the Digimon universe and was released back in 2014. Combining a vivid art style with the classic 2D movement that fighting games are often known for, the game offers an awesome gaming experience for people of all ages and will be especially appreciated by avid fans of the Digimon World.

Now, let’s take a look at what you can expect from this charming fighting game.

A cast of playable Digimon

Though the game only features 12 different Digimon characters to play as, there are a total of 32 unique forms to choose from, so there's still quite a bit of variety to enjoy. Not all of the Digimon are unlocked from the start, however, so you'll need to play through the story mode first before you unlock the whole cast. The four starters are as follows: Agumon, Dorulumon, Gabumon, and Shoutmon.

Each character plays differently, so be sure to give them all a go and see which one you like most. With so much variety, there’s bound to be at least one you really like.

Map stages based on the Digimon World

There are 10 different maps to choose from in Digimon All-Star Rumble, and if you're a long-time fan of Digimon you'll likely recognize some of the locations. Each map in the game has a unique gimmick that differentiates it from the rest, keeping things fresh from map to map and adding some extra challenges to the game. For example, Digital Station features a machine Digimon that zooms across the bottom of the map dealing damage every so often, while Coela Beach has geysers that randomly activate. There are even more cool map features, but you’ll have to download Digimon All-Star Rumble to discover them all for yourself!

Digicards

One unique feature of this game is that you can equip unlockable Digicards to give yourself an advantage in battles. There are 200 unique ones to collect, with some having defensive abilities and others offensive abilities. These abilities activate at the end of combos and produce unique effects that can turn the tide of battle, so be sure to collect them all.

Multiplayer madness

As with most fighting games, Digimon All-Star Rumble features a multiplayer mode where you can face off against a friend in a 1-vs-1 duel. Choose your favorite Digimon, equip your best Digicards, and battle it out to the end to see who the better player is. No fighting game is complete without a multiplayer mode so it’s great to see this in the game.

7

Though it's not the best fighting game around, Digimon All-Star Rumble has a bunch of cool features that make it super enjoyable to play. If you're keen to get your hands on a fighting game set in the Digimon universe that's similar in style to Pokkén Tournament, then this is 100% the game for you and I’d highly recommend you give it a go.

Pros:

  • Set in the cute, charming world of Digimon with plenty of references to the anime
  • Multiplayer mode allows for fun with friends
  • The art style and graphics are really cool and vivid

Cons:

  • Not a lot of playable character options compared to other fighting games
  • The story is quite lacking and isn’t the most exciting around
  • The game could do with a few extra modes for players to explore
