Get ready for Dark Quest: Board Game, a roguelike adventure game like nothing you’ve ever seen before. Build your party, draw your cards, roll your dice and fight your way through hordes of monsters until you reach the evil sorcerer and his vile magics. This is a fantastic digital recreation of what its like to play a classic tabletop board game with dice, miniatures, cards and a massive roster of monsters for you to battle against. This amazing game captures the magic that older board games had. If this sounds interesting to you, keep reading as we get into it.
Gameplay
This game is loosely based on the iconic tabletop game Dungeons & Dragons, the same game that generated Baldur’s Gate 3 and Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance. This should give you a pretty good idea of what the vibe is, but the gameplay is a little different. This is a tactical turn-based game where you build your team and try to take on the evil sorcerer as efficiently as possible. This is the sort of game that requires an attention to detail. Running in and hoping for the best is not going to cut it here, as skill is defined by how clever you are and how much you understand the rules, not but how fast you can press a button.
You need to understand your parties’ strengths and weaknesses, as there is a real focus on your tactics. Adventure cards are used to simulate the various changing circumstances that may arise in battle, and you must react accordingly. As you are travelling, you will encounter many situations that you will need to react to. Maybe a bunch of thieves appear and want your loot. Maybe a tavern brawl is about to break out and you’re caught in the middle.
This is, for all intents and purposes, a solid adventure game that is all content and no gimmicks. I found myself having a genuinely great time playing it. If you like games like Gloomhaven, this is your sort of game.
Visuals
The visuals of this title are absolutely brilliant. It isn’t coming in trying to be the most beautiful game that you’ve ever seen, instead it is trying to simulate the feeling that playing old tabletop adventure games with the classic battle maps and icons. It’s supposed to be reminiscent of an actual battle board that sits in front of you in real life, crafted and painted by hand. It succeeds at this very, very well.
I found the look of the settings, buildings, enemies and everything in between to have an undeniable charm.
Multiplayer
Yes, that’s right, there is multiplayer. You will be able to jump into the fray with a friend and take the battle to the sorcerer as a team. If that doesn’t increase the classic tabletop vibes, I don’t know what will.
A fantastic strategy RPG that will please even the most securitizing tabletop gaming fans. The perfect adventure game for any adventurer.
