Anytime a game is made from a movie, caution is generally the best approach and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is one of the reasons why. Based on the movie of the same name, the potential for a great game is significant but so is the opposite. Unfortunately the only great thing about this game is the title as it becomes obvious quickly that it's plagued with problems and finishing it becomes more of a test of personal stamina then anything else.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is a simple action game that follows closely to the movie's plot line. Different characters from the movie are followed as they basically take out wave after wave of enemies. That can be a test of patience by itself but to make matters worse, often the same areas have to be gone through multiple times in the same mission.

Once a mission is completed and the story moves to a different character, the entire previous mission is often revisited again with the new character. The monotonous aspects could possible be overlooked if the gameplay required any significant strategy elements but unfortunately, most of the battles are reduced to button smashing while jumping in and out of fights.

Continuing with the repetitive theme, the graphics follow suit as well. Although the quality of graphics is decent at first look, they quickly become tired as the same enemies keep attacking with a limited set of animations. There are some destructible elements in the environment that help to liven things up but overall it could have been much better.

Unfortunately, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon falls on its own sword in most aspects. The repetitive nature of the game combined with poorly executed gameplay elements make it hard to enjoy on almost any level. If you're a fan of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, I'd stick with the movie.

Game Reviews

It's been a while since I've seen a game like this. Actually, it's been almost since the launch of the PS2 that I've seen a game with this lack of polish and refinement. Now, I'm sure that some of you are already nodding your head, knowing that a franchise title isn't going to be any good, but I'm a bit of a movie fan boy, so I held out my hopes.

Let's begin with the basics, in this case, the combat system. It's slow, it's clunky, and it dominates every scene in the game. You've got armed and unarmed attacks, but for some reason, you are limited to one attack one at a time. Every time you'd like to throw a kick, you'll be sheathing your sword to facilitate doing so. The enemies are abound in such great quantity, and for some reason are more than capable of kicking your character's ass, even though you get to play main characters from the CTHD film.

My biggest complaint comes in the elements this game carries over from the film. It's been released three years after the movie, which is already a problem for a franchise title, but also on top of that, not only does it poorly recreate scenes from the film, it fails to consistently stay within the boundaries of what a character can do. For one thing, running across a simple rope isn't possible for one of our characters; instead you're required to hang from the rope and cross slowly, ala Lara Croft.

There is some variation in the boss fights and the game does have a saving grace in that the combo block animations all look really cool, but for the most part, the game is highly repetitive. Alone, I had to force myself to plod forward, as I couldn' withstand the overuse of a combat system that's simplistic and lacks any really engrossing gameplay.

A friend best described the game as 'meh', presumably meaning that it's a take or leave sort of experience, something fairly unoriginal, and really unmemorable and I could not think of any way to top that description.
