You wonder why so many board games are translating into video games lately? Perhaps we're now only seeing the untapped market of tabletop gaming enthusiasts looking for a more portable version of preferred entertainment. Whatever the case, Concordia: Digital Edition is the latest board game to see a video game release.

Though I've never played too many board games outside the most prominent ones, I'm still fascinated with the concept. Concordia isn't one I've ever heard of - but again, the premise is intriguing. You'll be put to the challenge of striking a magnificent trade empire throughout the Roman provinces - but you'll have to use your wits and skills to overcome your opponents. There's a first time for everything, so let's try Concordia: Digital Edition out.

For the Glory of Rome

The original Concordia board game is about building trade networks and winning by having a superior merchant empire. Usually, for games that involve Rome - it's about military dominance. That's certainly not the case here, with the game's mechanics encouraging their players to use the full extent of their brainpower.

On the subject of mechanics, it's a turn-based game that uses cards to take action when building your trade network. The core gameplay is something that translates nicely into the video game arena. Concordia: Digital Edition doesn't feature overly complex rules - but does become hard to master if you ultimately want to seek an advantage over your opponents.

The game's visuals are as you would expect. It's more faithful to the board game, but the omitting potential for adding flair to the game. The board is mapped out with Rome's colonies, and there isn't much in the way of animations or cinematics to make each turn more exciting. In Concordia's favor, it is a clean, refreshing, and simple interface. That makes the game accessible to more players.

But you can't help but feel the game could have done with something extra for its digital edition. You can tell that fans of Concordia are excited to have their beloved board game in their pocket. But those who would be trying for the first time might expect a little more than just a direct remake of the physical version onto a digital platform. Alas, Concordia: Digital Edition does work just fine, though.

The Merchant Republic

The visuals and mechanics of Concordia: Digital Edition give players a Civilization VI vibe. Perhaps because the sort of chessboard nature of the game paired with the turn-based strategy mechanics makes these offerings two peas in a pod. If you are a fan of the Civilization franchise and haven't yet played Concordia - you'd probably find the game compelling.

However, Concordia: Digital Edition is nothing more than a device-dedicated version of the original. You get the feeling that the developers didn't want to take risks as hardcore fans might have something to say about it. That's fine, as long as the core mechanics work flawlessly. Concordia: Digital Edition will have a difficult time pulling in a new player base, though.

Pros:

  • A faithful adaptation of the board game
  • Seamless gameplay following the original mechanics
  • Cross-platform to host a large player base on multiplayer

Cons:

  • Lacking any extra animations or flair with the potential to do so
  • It won't be attractive to new players
  • The general difficulty curve can be relentless
