Now, if you have to ask how to play pool... well, okay, but don't forget to renew your Nerds-R-Us membership card. Use... stick... it... ball... in... hole -- got it? If you already thrill to the feel of fine green felt under your fingertips, Championship Pool by Mindscape racks up a great game of billiards (pool).

Call Your Shots

You play via a top-notch overhead view of the table. You take shots by simply moving a cursor next to the ball you want to strike with the cue ball and then you press a single button.

ProTip: Practice bank shots. There's no way that you'll win a Tournament without 'em.

The controls are excellent, featuring muscle and finesse. You can set shot power and determine English (spin) on the ball. You can make all the traditional shots, such as Cuts, Banks, and Pushes. If you need assistance, a slick Phantom Ball feature enables you to see the path of the cue ball.

Play the entire table whenever you shoot. Plan your first shot to set up your second.

Not Just for Hustlers

Championship Pool provides a wide range of challenges. You get the standard eight games, including classics like Eight Ball, Nine Ball, Cutthroat, and Rotation. Tournament Mode sets up 8-Ball or 9-Ball contests versus CPU hustlers. You can even have a pool party featuring 11 games for up to eight people. Further, you can practice trick shots.

The graphics are great. The tabletop action of the balls is realistic and fast. You can also zoom in at any angle and scroll around the entire table for a close-up look at potential shots.

  • The cushion around the pockets is soft, so shoot straight or reduce Power to minimize rebounds.
  • To make the most accurate shots, reduce Power to Low.

The sounds of pool star here. The whack of billiard balls and the classic thunk of the pool cue are perfect. The music features toe-tapping rock, country, and blues riffs.

When you have no shot, try to make the cue ball stop at a place that'll make your opponent's next shot equally tough.

Rack 'Em Up!

This game's a winner, even if you've never wrapped your forefinger around a cue stick. Like its real-life counterpart, Championship Pool is a game anyone can play, but not everyone can play well.

Yes, it is a video game version of pool. What's even more odd is it almost plays like the real thing! Many great options here (like perspective shifts) make this come alive! Some of the options could be eliminated, though.

There’s no need to drag a pool table around anymore whenever you want to play billiards. All you have to do is get a copy of Championship Pool.

Promoting the pool industry on all levels since the 1940s, the Billiards Congress of America takes the game very seriously. Championship Pool for the Sega Genesis comes fully sanctioned by this respected organization.

In Championship Pool there are four modes of play: Challenge, Tournament, Party, and Freestyle. When you choose the Freestyle mode, it's like owning your own pool table. You can invent rules, make up games, and practice trick shots. In the Tournament mode, you can shoot for the 8-Ball or 9-Ball World Championship. The Party mode lets up to eight players join in the fun. The Challenge mode is for one player to practice and test his or her skills such as shooting, speed, accuracy, and touch.

Every kind of billiards game is available including 3-Ball, 9-Ball, 8-Ball, 10-Ball, 14-1 Continuous, Rotation, 15-Ball, Straight Pool, Equal Offense, and Speed Pool.

In all of the modes of play, you can view instant replays, choose the song on the juke box, set the spin of the ball, and decide how hard you want to hit the ball.

Now you can play billiards anywhere with Championship Pool.
