Bloodshore

Now here's something we haven't seen in a while - an interactive movie delivered as a video game. Bloodshore would seem to the unsuspecting eye as a high-octane action film. However, it's presented in the way of a choose your own adventure game. It's not an entirely original concept, but one that hasn't liberally been released on platforms.

Typically you'd find these interactive movies on your big screen. Bloodshore seeks to break boundaries in dedicating to a gamer audience rather than a film one. The premise, setting, and levels of interactivity seem more tailored as a game, but everything is live-action. It will be interesting to see if Bloodshore delivers on its ambitions, so let's check it out.

Human Games

Being a live-action film, the narrative matters here - so we won't go spoiling that. However, we can give the gist of Bloodshore to give you an idea of what's going on. Basically, the plot is a televised battle royale that pits some prominent members of backwater society against each other. Seems like we've heard this before, huh?

That's because you probably have. The storyline is by no means one that's particularly gripping or full of twists. It's just a straightforward plot to drive the interactivity of the film. So let's focus on whether the core part of this offering works and engages players the same way a traditional video game would. Well, it's hard to say.

The action and explosiveness of the live-action scenes are definitely well done. It all comes about pretty consistently to keep you focused in this universe. There's enough decision-making to keep players immersed, too. But somehow, Bloodshore seems to fall a bit short of what it's trying to do. It feels a bit lacking as a game and does give the impression of a B-grade movie.

Because the story is so bland, it doesn't make for exciting choices in the game. What we'll give Bloodshore is that it is a milestone to pave the way for something better. At the moment, there just doesn't seem to be enough on offer in terms of narrative and interactivity. However, we have no doubt that the craft can be mastered.

A Swing and a Miss

Bloodshore is ambitious, offering the most footage of any interactive 'game' film. However, seems to lack the budget to create something a little more lavish. It doesn't compare to the technical design of Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and lacks the deep and meaningful choices of Telltale games such as The Walking Dead series.

Ultimately, Bloodshore is a swing and a miss. But should you give it a go? Maybe not at its current price point. But should there be any bargains behind the offering, it's worth seeing what the future of film looks like. You won't find anything particularly fantastic about the scenes or interactivity, but every innovative genre has to start somewhere.
