Army Men II

As children, most of us had a collection of green plastic army men to carry out adventures for us in our mind’s eye. Even as adults, the appeal of these small but numerous toys from our youth are still there, and a game around them could be a fascinating experience if it’s done well. The game Army Men II begins with a spectacular cut scene of army men being sent through a portal from their world into the real world. There they fight tan army men across kitchen counters in an epic battle that is surprisingly well rendered.

After this, you get a turn at guiding Sarge, the main character of the game, through that same kitchen themed battleground, facing a host of issues small plastic men would find concerning (Cockroaches and stove tops, if you’re curious). The tone of the game is a great improvement compared to other games in the series, but not quite as strong as a similar game, Toy Commander.

Challenging Shooter Game

Despite the quirky toy theme that makes it seem like a game appropriate for kids, this is a surprisingly difficult game. While the first two levels are fairly straight forward, the rest of the missions can be downright brutal as you try to fight your way back from “army man world” back to the real world.

Although the game is challenging, it doesn’t tip over into impossible. With practice you can get through all the levels, it just won’t be easy.

New Weapons

A big improvement from the first Army Men game is that there are a large range of weapons to choose from. Some of the weapons are quite fun and creative, such as an aerosol can that can be ignited into a flame thrower.

The game also allows you to carry a generous 6 different weapons with you at one time, so if you’re having trouble deciding which sort of weapon to take, you don’t have to limit yourself a great deal.

Varied environments

A nice feature of the game is that it rarely reuses the same environment. Each mission changes the backdrop as you struggle to get back to the real world, and so does the object of the mission. Most of the time you’ll have to destroy what ever soldier color isn’t green, but other times you have to narrow your focus to specific equipment. This keeps the game entertaining, and is a big improvement from the first Army Men.

Instability with multi-player

Army Men II offers two types of game play, single player and multi-player. The single player version is very stable and seldom has issues, but the multi-player can be very unstable. During play the game crashes easily, and there are no patches available to address the issue.

5

All in all, Army Men II is a fun idea that could have been polished up a bit more. While the game itself is entertaining, the camera angles make it hard to play well, and the graphics are for the most part very grainy.

Pros:

  • Large variety of environments
  • Challenging missions

Cons:

  • Unstable multi-player
  • Grainy graphics for most of game

Game Reviews

Do you remember the soldiers you used to play with in the back yard? The little plastic ones that would melt when you set fire to them? There was a game about them a few months ago - Army Men, which bombed spectacularly, probably cos it was bloody terrible. Publishers 3D0 have taken the rather optimistic step of rush releasing a sequel wherein your diminutive warriors get to scrap over various domestic battlefields (gardens, kitchens etc) as well as the more conventional jungles and airfields of the previous incarnation.

The idea is a fairly good one - imagine Cannon Fodder meets Micro Machines- but like so many good game ideas it's been well and truly pissed up the wall. The supposedly improved AI is risible (your men require careful shepherding lest they get stuck on the scenery), and the missions are just plain dull. It's also repetitive. Simply put: Army Men 2 is about as much fun as shitting bowling balls.
