Do you like seeing giant robots battling it out in a fight to the death?

If yes, please continue reading this review.

Would you like seeing the above in a slightly re-hashed title called Armored Core: Nine Breaker, a title that will likely drive away newcomers to the series and just barely satisfy present fans?

If yes, please continue reading this review, and if no' well, you might as well read the rest of the review since you're a decent ways along already.

Armored Core: Nine Breaker is much like all other Armored Core titles, but with all that narrative filler thrown out the window and replaced by a completely different kind of filler. See, the meat and potatoes of the game is the ability to combat other robots in arena style matches while working the ranks and moving on up in the world with your robot. So, you and your opponent are thrown into large, open areas and duke it out to the death in a last man standing deal, where upon victory, you're awarded cash so that you can fully stock your robot.

Giant robot destruction. Awesome.

There's a heavy heaping of strategy you'll need to take alongside the random destruction, however. Armored Core: Nine Breaker isn't lacking in the move department, and with all the complexities of the game, you're in for a hefty challenge throughout the course of the game.

But, the biggest challenge, it seems, is just figuring the game out. If you're new to the Armored Core universe, consider yourself screwed. Since there's no over-arching narrative, you're thrown knee-deep into the game and left to figure out how to grapple with the complexities of operating a giant robot. Sure, there are training missions, but they're there in name only, and serve more as a series of medal events that help give you more bank for the customization process. And the customization process, which lets you gear your robot out to the gills, is incredibly expansive; while that's great for Armored Core veterans, it'll just leave newcomers baffled and confused as to what to do.

And, truth be told, Armored Core: Nine Breaker won't be wowing your senses while making a grab for your wallet. The graphics wreak of launch-quality graphics, with extremely low polygonal counts and simple effects that will fail to impress on several different levels. The audio fares much better, however, with 5.1 Dolby Digital sound that's complemented with strong sound effects and voice acting.

If this kind of thing is your bag, then I have no doubt you'll spend joyful days tinkering with your robot and sending them off to their doom. There's a lot to play with here and the core of the game is strong, but if you're looking for a nice jumping off point into the Armored Core series, this is definitely not the game to start with.
