A Game About Digging A Hole

While A Game About Digging A Hole is a one and done kind of game and a pretty short game, this is also something that left one hell of an impression on me. I love weird and quirky little games, and there is honestly no better way to describe what is going on here than that. The title of the game is pretty much exactly what this is, but there is also a mystery aspect to this, and due to my overactive imagination, my mind was completely racing in regards to what the meaning of all this was!

A New House For 10 Grand? Sign Me Up!

The story of A Game About Digging A Hole is that we find a suspiciously affordable house, and we decide to pull the trigger and buy it. However, not only is the house cheap, it comes with the promise that there is some kind of treasure buried in the backyard and that is the main reason as to why we are so interested in the house. The catch is, we have to manually dig our way down as far as we can to get the supposed treasure that is somewhere buried deep on this property.

They Live In A Hole

I am going to try and not spoil anything here, but if you are worried about spoilers, skip to the next section. A Game About Digging A Hole is a game about obsession and our obsession with getting to the bottom of finding as much treasure as we can. However, the twist here is that there is something living in this hole, and that right there got me interested. However, for such a simple little game and a game that does not really tell you a great deal, the ending truly did blow me away and had my mind racing with ideas. In many ways, the story here is a bit similar to the movie Vivarium, which is an obscure movie, but if you like this game, I highly recommend you check that movie out.

Digging For Treasure!

The gameplay of A Game About Digging A Hole sees us having this battery powered shovel, and we use it to dig down. As we dig down, we find ores that we can then take to our shed and sell online to get upgrades. The upgrades are things like a drill, a light, and a jetpack so that we can get up and down the mine safely. We basically keep on repeating this process, getting more and more obsessed with finding the true treasure that lies within as well as finding out what else is down here waiting for us. You are probably looking at around a couple of hours max to play through this, but they are a fantastic couple of hours, and I played through the game in one sitting! I would love some kind of follow up to this to explain what the hell is really going on. However, at the same time, it is kind of fun how it is left to your own imagination, too.

For A Certain Kind Of Player

The presentation of A Game About Digging A Hole is certainly not anything to shout about, but it more than gets the job done for what this very talented solo developer was trying to do here. This is more of an experience than just a video game, and the rather basic visuals add a great deal of charm to the whole thing. Actually, saying basic visuals is a bit harsh as they more than get the job done, but there is just something about this game that I feel will make it click for some people and not click for others. I do not see there being any middle ground with this one.

I had a blast with this, and while I did say that A Game About Digging A Hole was a one-and-done kind of game during the intro. I am not sure I would be against playing through this again at some point, if I am being honest. I never expected the “lore” of this game to grab me so much. As I write this, it is April of 2025, and the game came out in February of 2025. I could hand on heart see this being on my games of the year list or, at the very least, being my top indie game of the year.

Pros:

  • The actual digging stuff is very addictive
  • I got completely sucked in by the mystery of this game
  • I liked getting the upgrades
  • This is just a short, sweet, and awesome little indie game

Cons:

  • It left me with a bunch of questions that I need answers for!
  • I can see this not being everyone's cup of tea
