A Date with Death

A Date with Death is up there as the greatest free visual novel I have ever played. I cannot say enough positive things about this game and I am so glad that I dedicated some time to it as it was such a fantastic experience. It may be a tad on the short side, but there are multiple endings and it is the kind of game that can make you happy and also make you sad. If you ever wanted a game where you get the chance to try and romance death this is the game for you.

Luck Or Fate

In A Date with Death, we start off by creating our character, we get to choose our appearance, pronouns, and even our apartment. We can change and customize as we progress through the game. Now, we play as a regular person, but we have always had lady luck on our side. When things go bad, it was always like there was someone or something there that just gave us a little nudge to make sure that we would be ok, we just rolled with it until one day a strange app thing appeared.

Hi, I Am Death And I Will Be Taking Your Soul

On this strange messenger app (A Date with Death does a great job at making this seem real) we end up chatting with someone or something that claims to be the Grim Reaper and they have come for our soul. We start to chat with them and get to know them a bit and we end up making a bet with them where our soul is the prize. We basically get to know the Grim Reaper better and better and the story can go in a few different ways. It is honestly fantastic stuff with excellent writing that always keeps you engaged and interested in what is going on.

Just Be Yourself

The gameplay of A Date with Death is very much that of a visual novel. Most of what we do is respond to the Grim Reaper and the stuff we say and do will change what they say and do, ultimately leading to one of the different endings. There is other stuff here like customizing the appearance of your character and changing your apartment and of course, petting your cute pet. However, the real gameplay here is all about the various choices you make and the game gives you a lot of choices. The best compliment that I can give the gameplay is that the choices really do feel like they matter.

You Remind Me Of The Babe

Ok, so this is going to sound weird, but there is just something about the whole style of A Date with Death that gives me David Bowie vibes. Hey, I am not sure what it is, but the character designs and the overall style is just so very “Bowie” to me. The whole game looks fantastic, from the slick and stylish backgrounds to the design of the app. The characters look fantastic and I love the way that they have this kind of anime, but realistic thing going on. The whole game thanks to the visuals oozes personality. Also, this game has a very chill soundtrack, kind of a low-fi thing going on and it is very understated, but it fits the soul of the game very well.

Pros:

• I loved the whole visual style and vibe the game had

Cons:

• It is a little on the short side
• One mess up can wreck a whole run

A Date with Death is a simulation of dating death itself. All your life you were no different from other people, slowly living out your days.
