Solar System #517 has been invaded by the Alien Serpentbeasts. Led by the evil Grax, these creatures from deep space are as dangerous as a flight through an asteroid belt, and they are determined to complete their mission of conquest no matter what stands in their way. Worse, Grax has seven brothers helping him, each having been assigned his own world to terrorize, and each as evil - and sometimes even more evil - than Grax. All told, there are eight worlds in Solar System #517 that you, the player, must run through, destroying the enemy as you go.

The 3-D Battles of WorldRunner can be played in two different modes. The first is an actual three-dimensional mode for which you must wear the supplied 3-0 specs. Unfortunately, the three-dimensional effect is only barely acceptable, with objects that are "closest" having a double image that's hard on the eyes. Also, for some reason, the scenes in the 3-D mode are very dim, making it seems as if you're playing a night scene.

No need to despair, though: the regular play mode has a marvelous simulated 3-D effect that in many ways is more convincing than the mode requiring the glasses. In fact, the graphics are so well done that the squeamish among you may end up with motion sickness if you play too long!

WorldRunner is, at first glance, an NES version of Sega's famous Space Harrier. The perspective is the same, with the player-character moving at high speed "into" the screen while the scenery flows toward him. Just as with Space Harrier, there are many objects that you must steer around and creatures that you must destroy. At the end of each level, you must defeat a Serpentbeast, and the animation and game play here are so similar to that of Sega's masterpiece that it's bound to raise some eyebrows.

However, though this game owes a great debt to Space Harrier, it is different enough to stand on its own. Unlike Space Harrier, the player-character in WorldRunner is earthbound; the only way he can get off the ground is to jump - which he must do frequently to get over the many bottomless pits that cover the surface of the planets and to grab the Super Stars, some of which are hanging above head level.

The surfaces of the worlds in Solar System #517 contain special columns that, when bumped into, give you bonus items. These items include Laser Missiles, which supply shooting power; Power Potions, which offer temporary invincibility; Atomic Power, which gives another form of invincibility; Hearts, which award extra lives; Super Stars, which are accumulated for bonus points; Cosmic Clocks, which reset the timer; Warp Balloons, which take the player-character to a bonus round; Junior Jumpers, which increase jumping powers; and Super Jumpers, which also increase jumping powers, but to a greater degree than the Junior Jumpers.

Of course, there are also plenty of enemy creatures to avoid or destroy. These creatures include Menacing Meanies, White Willies, Towering Infernos, Diamond Demons, Venus Die Traps and many others, all of which have their own powers and patterns of movement. One of the most annoying creatures is the Hand Man, who looks like a giant hand and, when run into, stops you dead in your tracks and blocks your every movement, causing you to lose many precious seconds.

Even though the creators of WorldRunner had Space Harrier in mind when they sat down to the design table, they managed to come up with something different enough to merit a slot in your game library. This game is not only visually stunning, but engrossing, as well. Highly recommended.

The 3D Battle of a Lifetime! A strange world terrorized by an alien Serpent-beast, has asked you, WorldRunner, for help. Knowing you can outrun, outjump and outblast anything, you race into battle.

Published and developed by Square Co., Ltd., the game was released in 1987.

The evil Grax and the race of Serpentbeasts, serpent-like beasts, are horrifying the people of the eight worlds, in the place known as Solar System #517. And all they need is someone, better a hero, who is able to run and jump. Actually, the hero will have to jump between worlds. There is such one, a superman – a wild "space cowboy" called WorldRunner.

This is a 3rd person game, behind the player, moving "forwards" towards the screen and away. The only skill featured is the ability to jump over holes, enemies and on top of columns. Bonus items can be in the air, on columns’ top and lying on the ground. In addition, the game is viewable in 3-D with a pair of 3-D glasses which are included in the original box.
