Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Ghoul Patrol

Oh, hell year was what I said when I heard that Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Ghoul Patrol was getting re-released on Steam as well as all the consoles too. I played the hell out of the first game on the Super Nintendo back in my high school days, it really was a firm favorite of mine and I am very excited to get the chance to save the neighborhood once again.

Eerie Indiana

If you get that 90s reference you are awesome and know exactly what I am talking about here! Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Ghoul Patrol could not be any more 90s!

Both the games feature two teenage protagonists in Zeke and Julie and they need to save their neighborhood from zombies, monsters, and all other kinds of horror movie tropes. In the sequel, they actually unleash the monsters themselves and must fight to put them back. Look, there is the barebones of a story here, but back in the day as a monster movie-loving teenager, I ate this stuff up!

Save The Cheerleader Save The World

The gameplay of Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Ghoul Patrol is that of an action game. You pick either Zeke or Julie and each level (of which there are a ton in both games) sees you having to go around and find the various people and save them. There are cheerleaders, old ladies, dudes hanging out in the pool, babies, and more. You just walk into them and save them. You have to watch out because if a monster sees you and there is a “victim” near they will get them. Once you have them all, you can go to the exit.

Both games are pretty much identical in terms of the gameplay. Back in the day, I loved Zombies Ate My Neighbors, but by the time Ghoul Patrol came out, I felt that it lacked that wow factor the first game had. Do not get me wrong, it still had charm and all the crazy weapons and characters that the first game offered, but it never really evolved.

That Extra Garnish

What we have here with Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Ghoul Patrol is more of a re-release. The graphics are the same, the music is the same, the levels are the same, and so on. What you played on the SNES back in the 90s is here in its entirety. There are a few extras that I am pretty excited about. To start with you can save your game anytime any place, I would have killed for this feature back in the day.

There are also achievements to earn as well which I think actually adds to the game as you can now play for more than just getting to the end of it. Best of all, there is a gallery where you can view stuff like concept art and interviews with people behind the game.

Pros:

• It features both games in one package
• These games are a lot of fun and pretty damn challenging too!
• I like how you can now save where ever you want
• The developer interviews are a very nice addition

Cons:

• Nothing has actually changed in the games themselves
• I still think that Zombies is a far, far better game than Ghoul Patrol
