Young Justice: Legacy

Based on the popular DC Comics characters, Young Justice: Legacy is an action-adventure game with some RPG elements thrown into the mix. Flawed as it might be, there are still some aspects of the game that can be considered entertaining, especially for younger players. The shallow gameplay and uninspired visuals might scare away some of the most seasoned players. However, if you’re willing to put up with some of the game’s weaker aspects, you might find some enjoyment out of the simple fun that the game can provide.

Teenage heroes

For those unfamiliar with the franchise, Young Justice is a team comprised of younger versions of the characters from the Justice League. Some of the most prominent heroes in the game are Kid Flash, Nightwing, and Batgirl.

The game looks similar to another superhero beat ‘em up: Marvel Ultimate Alliance. The roster features sixteen characters to choose from, but players will be limited to forming teams of up to three characters at a time. Each character has a unique fighting style, but their controls are very similar between each other.

That said, some characters with special abilities (like flight) can enjoy some extra movement options on the field. However, these skills are reduced in order to achieve a balance between all characters.

Additionally, each character has unlockable costumes that change their powers and abilities. With at least three different costumes per character, there’s a lot of variety to be seen here, something that fans of the show will surely enjoy.

Looking good?

Sure, the visual variety that the roster and each of their costumes offer is impressive, yet the game’s visuals leave much to be desired. Character models look unimpressive, with blocky features and rigid facial animations. On that subject, combat animations also look subpar, looking like a much older game than it is.

The design of the stages is also quite disappointing, being mostly open corridors with waves of similar-looking enemies waiting in ambush. For a game set in the colorful DC Comics universe, Young Justice: Legacy looks unexpectedly drab.

Fortunately, the voice acting is pretty good, with some voices from the animated series reprising their roles for the game. This, along with the costume variety and multiple iconic villains, might appeal to younger players who are more interested in watching their favorite cartoon characters come to life, rather than playing a mechanically competent game.

Superhero team-up

A game like Young Justice: Legacy is best enjoyed with friends. Fortunately, the game allows you to play with up to two other human players locally or online, and this is definitely the best way to enjoy the game. Not that the AI does an abysmal job playing with you, it’s just that it’s easier to coordinate tactics with other fellow humans.

It might not remedy some of the most glaring flaws of the game, but playing with friends will at least give you some enjoyment, even if it’s at the expense of some of the game’s many glitches.

4.5

Young Justice: Legacy is an uninspired superhero beat ‘em up with tons of flaws that suck the enjoyment right out of it. For fans of the franchise, there might be some fun in unlocking some of the costumes and seeing their favorite characters fighting together. For people just looking for a fun superhero game, it’s best to look elsewhere.

Pros:

  • Many characters and unlockable costumes
  • Solid voice acting

Cons:

  • Muddy visuals
  • Unresponsive controls
  • Repetitive levels
