Wreck-It Ralph

Packed with all the magic of the Disney animated film, Wreck-It Ralph for the Nintendo 3DS is a basic side-scroller platformer ideal for the younger players in the family. With a plot that takes place after the events of the film, this is also a great companion piece for fans of the movie who just want to see more adventures featuring Ralph and Felix.

While the presentation might be lacking – even by 3DS standards – and the gameplay is a bit on the shallow side of things, Wreck-It Ralph is still easy to recommend for younger gamers who are just getting into the hobby.

More Ralph

Video games are an essential part of the Wreck-It Ralph film, so it makes sense that a video game adaptation of the movie would eventually be released. It also follows the long list of Disney adaptations that has given us such classics as The Lion King and Aladdin for the 32-bit consoles.

At its core, Wreck-It Ralph retains most of the same core ideas as those classic Disney games: it's an easy-to-understand platformer designed with younger players in mind featuring some of the film's most recognizable characters. As I mentioned before, the game doesn't follow the events of the film, being more of a pseudo-sequel instead.

Story Issues

While the decision to turn the game into a separate story from the film is great for people who just want to see more of Ralph, it also hurts the overall narrative by virtue of the plot not being near as gripping or captivating as the one from the movie.

The game features four different locations from the film that Ralph and Felix will have to navigate to find and squash any remaining Cy-Bugs. For this, players will have to make use of their powers: Ralph smashes things, while Felix repairs them. Working in tandem will prove essential to clear the levels' hazards, which only makes it more disappointing when you notice that there's no multiplayer option.

Retro Style

Instead of using the 2D designs we see in the film, Wreck-It Ralph goes for a more traditional 3D side-scrolling format that has some mixed results. While younger players might appreciate the game's 3D models and environments – made even better by the 3DS glasses-free 3D – there's no denying that the overall presentation leaves much to be desired.

Some elements of the background often blend with the enemies, making it harder to see any stage hazards. To make matters worse, the 3DS' low resolution makes it almost impossible to distinguish most of the animations, making the experience feel even more dated than if it just looked like a retro-styled 2D platformer.

Wreck-It Ralph for the Nintendo 3DS leaves much to be desired for a platformer, but, at the very least, its accessible difficulty and charming characters might be enough to keep younger players entertained for a while.

Pros

  • Story that complements the film
  • Good use of 3D in some areas
  • Some voice-acted lines

Cons

  • Repetitive levels
  • Ugly visuals
  • Disappointing plot compared to the movie
