With over 75 painstakingly modeled rally cars spanning the eras, WRC is a motorsports buffet. Modern beasts like the Ford Puma, Toyota GR Yaris and Hyundai i20N Rub shoulders with legends like the Lancia Stratos, Audi Quattro S1, Subaru Impreza 22B and Mitsubishi Lancer Evo. Each vehicle feels distinct, with subtle differences in weight distribution, power delivery and handling. Gruppe B cars behave like barely contained explosions, while modern Rally1 machines corner with surgical precision.
Rally racing fans rejoice - with EA Sports WRC, Codemasters has reclaimed the rally racing crown. As the first officially licensed WRC game from the studio since 2002’s Colin McRae Rally 3, WRC leaps forward technologically while staying true to the spirit of classic rally simulations. Powered by the Unreal Engine 4 and leveraging next-gen console power, WRC delivers staggeringly realistic graphics and intensely immersive gameplay that sets a new benchmark for the genre.
Gameplay That Grips and Thrills
WRC’s handling physics are superb, walking the line between simulation and accessibility. Playing on a standard controller, I immediately felt in tune with each car. Dirt, gravel, tarmac, ice - you can feel the change in traction model as surfaces change. Weight transfer during braking and acceleration is simulated realistically. Mastering corner entry speed, angles and throttle control is immensely rewarding. Damage modeling adds consequence without being punitive. Visual impairments from debris and dirt on the windshield are an excellent touch.
The extensive career mode features full weekends across WRC’s classic events like Monte Carlo, Sweden, Mexico and more. Strategic team management between stages creates a great sense of progression as you expand your crew and facilities while balancing short and long term goals. Weekly challenges and multiplayer keep you engaged outside the campaign. The livery editor is incredibly deep for creative types.
Presentation - A Technical Masterclass
Visually, WRC never fails to stun. Crisp 4K resolution with full ray tracing support, locked 60fps framerates, stunning environments - this is a technical showpiece. Rally1 cockpits are incredibly detailed right down to working digital displays. Dirt spatters accumulate realistically on the bodywork as trees sway and bend during impacts. Crowds cheer you on through photorealistic mountain passes and lush countryside.
The audio impresses just as much. Engines scream, anti-lag systems pop, turbos spool up and vent. Ambient environmental effects create an authentic sense of place. marshal radios crackle as you blast past. Cresting hills at full throttle had me grinning from ear to ear. Replays let you admire every detail in all its glory. This is immersion on another level.
With its meticulously modeled cars, scintillating presentation and stellar driving dynamics, WRC represents the new gold standard in rally simulations. Minor quibbles like repetitive co-driver calls aside, WRC gets everything right where it truly counts. I'm giving this a 9.5/10 score - fighting words for longtime champion Dirt Rally 2.0.
WRC is simply the most authentic and outright fun rally experience in generations. An absolute triumph by Codemasters. Rally fans, start your engines.
