Courtesy of Sega, Shion (a.k.a. Wonder Boy) has journeyed into the Genesis from the Master System.

This time, Shion is the only one that can save the once peaceful Monster World from evil, lurking monsters. This massive side-view, horizontally scrolling creature feature is a fun epic-length, action/adventure game with a role-play twist.

ProTip: Use the Ocarina to open the doors in the cave. Stand over the red notes and play BABABCB to open the first door, ABCBCAB to open the second door, and ACCABAB to open the third.

This game's a continuous trek that's long and adventure-filled (no levels). Starting out with only a Gradius sword and three lives, Shion braves otherworldly dangers in castles, deserts, towns, and even underwater. Don't worry, he'll pick up other weapons, magic, lives and goods on the way. Save his journey by resting at the Inn. The Boss monsters are extremely tough to beat. But the bigger they are, the more gold, lives, and magic Wonder Boy collects when he beats them. He'll also find gold and extra lives in the most unusual places.

Be sure to buy EVERYTHING. Wonder Boy will need it later. If he doesn't have enough money, go kill a few monsters until he has the gold.

Wonder Boy in Monster World is a winner for any system. The graphics are colorful and cute. The music is pleasant and calming. Make sure you have a couple hours, if not days, to spend travelling with Wonder Boy in Monster World. You'll have a monstrously good time.

The only way to beat the Ice Bomber is to run along the top ledge and hit him in the head.

Game Reviews

Monster World needs you once again! WonderBoy V continues where the first few left off! The land is being overrun with beasts! Journey through your town and pick up clues from everyone you meet, but some won't be willing to reveal much unless you offer something! Many different magic spells are available to use, as are a wide array of new and powerful weapons to purchase with gold.

Most of you should be familiar with the Wonderboy theme, which is essentially an action variant of Mario and countless other side-scrollers. There's a higher emphasis placed on the battle action and some may think it is overdone, but despite the repetitious nature of play, I was entertained through the early rounds.

The Wonder Boy series always combined the right amount of action in a quest game making it easy enough for a beginner to get interested yet difficult in the later levels for the more experienced player. Now, spruced up with 16 bit graphics this version is the best in the series. Quite a challenging quest!

I'm not into Wonderboy games and this cart is not that exciting to me. The graphics are cool and the sound is good but the game play is kind of boring and offers very little action. I just didn't find this cart exciting enough and I would rather play Super Adventure Island for the SNES. The weapons are neat though.

I really liked Wonder Boy V! It reminds me of games like Y's III, though targeted at kids. The music is excellent, and the graphics are really crisp and clear. The cartoonish characters are vibrant and colorful, adding more splendor to the Wonder Boy series. It may not be the best RPG or action title, but it is consistent.

Great games never die, they make sequels. Wonderboy IV is the colorful return of one of Sega's more popular characters. The mostly side-scrolling action is enhanced over the previous Wonderboy games in almost every way. The playability has been tweaked to near perfection, and the animation is smooth as silk. If you like games similar to Mario, the latest Wonderboy will suit you fine.

Master System owners know Wonder Boy well. He starred in three different adventures for Sega' 8-Bit system. What's next? Well, Wonder Boy makes his 16-bit debut in Wonder Boy in Monster World. In this action/adventure title he joins up with a magical companion to battle hordes of creepy creatures. To survive Wonder Boy must gather special items, use magic, and his best fighting skills and smarts to rid the planet of his powerful foes.

This is actually, the 4th wonderboy game. It started off as wonderboy, wonderboy in monster land, wonderboy the dragons trap, and this is the forth sequal. Those who have not played wonderboy, probably do not realise what a legendary game it trully is. Wonderboy in monster land (the second sequal) and wonderboy the dragons trap, were both Sega Master System games, and maybe the greatest games to have ever been on Sega Master System. This is the first wonderboy to be on Mega Drive and genesis (both versions are exactly the same) Wonderboy is not just anougher game, its a legendary series and a terrific game so try it for yourself.

I would like to make a correction to my previous comment, the sequels goes as follows: Wonderboy. Wonderboy in Monsterland. Wonderboy Monster Lair, Wonderboy the Dragons Trap. Wonderboy in Monsterworld, and Monsterworld IV so this is in fact the fifth Wonderboy in the series. If I could recommend any other japanese genesis game it would be Monsterworld IV, the final chapter in the series. I'm not sure if its on this site, but I got in from a link on gamefabrique, I think the site was called sureloads. It's very much like this game, and I would say its equally as good. The game originally only came out in japanese but theres a english version on the net so you can understand because theres a fair bit of roleplaying in it.
