Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector

You've probably seen this franchise littered in-game stores. You've likely dabbled in one of their numerous video game offerings. Yes, this series is the one that will continue rain or shine. Welcome to the family Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector! We're expecting you to be the same as the other games with slight tweaks and adjustments!

Warhammer 40,000 has almost felt like a staple of strategy games for decades. Even though plenty of these offerings have been questionable at best. Here we are with a new video game with a bit more promise to turn the classic physical gameplay into something a little more riveting for fans. So, does Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector deliver or not?

Welcome to the Battlesector

I have never been too immersed into the Warhammer 40,000 universe, as intriguing as it is. Perhaps it was introduced at a point where the lore was already quite intricate. That may be the reason why I've never particularly enjoyed the games. But even fans have critiqued some of the strategic values that Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector have been built on.

The game is a turn-based strategy game that aims to turn the genre into something more urgent and exciting. Arguably, Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector has done a decent job of making gameplay more action-based and immersive. The way you control your units and squads has a significantly aggressive feel to it, resembling the pace of the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

The combat, while respectable, is meticulous, though. Managing your units and targets requires a lot of thought in how you neutralize your enemies. However, decision-making is shortened by the urgency the visuals and mechanics provide. Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector makes a stride in bringing the more frivolities of the franchise accessible to a casual audience.

That being said, Warhammer 40,000 inductees will still have a little trouble getting started. From understanding the mechanics to getting aligned with the story - the game will take some time and effort to sync. However, it's a surprisingly good entry to a series (at least to myself) that always seemed to fall short of delivering such a vibrant and versatile franchise.

Bullets of Change

Admittedly, Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector is the first game of the franchise that I've felt attuned to. Yes, there are difficulties in making sense of the turn-based strategy mechanics - but there is a valiant effort to craft some decent gameplay. It does not feel like a game using the name to sell and offering barebones to their players.

It's been a good while since I have played a decent turn-based strategy game. I believe XCOM 2 was the last. But if I'll be darned, Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector is as engaging as they come. Even if I have no idea what's happening, worth a go - franchise fan or not.

Pros:

  • Great looking battle arenas that put urgency into the gameplay
  • Battles take on fast-paced action despite being turn-based
  • Much more immersive than previous Warhammer 40,000 games

Cons:

  • Still quite meticulous in battle detail - will deter some players
  • Unit variety is limited
