Video games based on popular media franchises tend to be a bit of a hit and miss video game subsection. Often times, trying to capture the plot points and the scenes of a movie and turn them into a playable video game can be more than a little challenging for those involved. Games like Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, then, are usually an example of what can go wrong when a game is released to try and tie-in with a movie.

This tied in with the popular movie that was released at the same time, and was released in 2005 to some mediocre acclaim. However, if you look at the game as less of an actual video game more of a Wallace and Gromit experience, it is much more enjoyable to play.

An interesting take on a popular platform

As you might imagine, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit focuses on playing as the title characters. Your job is simple – keep rabbits away from the Giant Vegetable Competition, as it could lead to a lot of problems if the rabbits manage to make their way into the convention and destroy it.

The game is also built around a rather interesting card system, where you must complete numerous tasks to get the cards that allow you to progress. This is an intriguing gameplay loop that can keep you coming back for more as you play. However, you also need to go around its four major districts and deal with various challenges.

You also need to help Wallace get his “Mind O Matic” device working again. if you are looking to play a story-based game that might remind some fans of titles like the old Buggs Bunny games, such as Lost in Time, you might find some similarities in this intriguing title.

An average enough example of the video game movie formula (6/10)

If you are looking for a deep game with impressive visuals and a story worth reliving, then Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit is likely to disappoint you. This is a pretty basic by the numbers movie tie-in game that covers some of the same plots in the movie by using slightly odd, sometimes ill-fitting gameplay mechanics to make it work.

It is a decent enough title, though, as you work through the game and unlock various new features. You can also get various hints and tips via Madame Winnie Bago, which can be useful for helping you to solve some of the less self-explanatory puzzle sections. All in all, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit is a game that offers something decent enough for fans of the series but if you are looking for a properly deep gaming experience then you are unlikely to find it waiting for you here.

6

The game focuses on growing a giant marrow by using so many different oddly combined features and gameplay loops that, at times, it can feel a touch confusing. If you like movie tie-in games, though, this should be an interesting enough option for most players.

Pros

  • Matches the atmosphere and theme of the movie quite well.
  • Blended and varied gameplay helps to keep the repetition away.

Cons

  • Rather limited in its scope and ambition, and lacks depth in most sections.
