Vertiginous Golf

Vertiginous Golf offers players an answer to a classic, age-old question: what do you get when you combine a steampunk dystopia with golf? The result is a mixed bag of thrills and interesting mechanics that are, sadly, not always reach their full potential.

This gravity-defying mini Golf game will test your skill (and your patience) with its outlandish courses, all set in their unique, and a bit disturbing, cloud world. If you dig the brass buildings of the steampunk aesthetic, or if you’re just looking for a compelling miniature golf experience, there are many reasons why Vertiginous Golf might be the game for you.

Golfing Above the Clouds

Vertiginous Golf is set in an alternate reality where steampunk reigns supreme, and society lives mostly up in the sky. In this Jetsons-like reality, life on the ground lives enveloped in a constant smog and under never-ending rain. Luckily for us, our mini-golf holes are set high above the clouds, in unique and complex holes that seemingly defy the laws of physics.

Every course plays more like a puzzle than a golf hole, putting the player’s skills to test. That said, the camera and the controls also will work against you, as the game’s more difficult to control than it should, resulting in some seemingly unfair – and highly frustrating – misses from time to time.

A Grim Future

As we mentioned before, the action in Vertiginous Golf takes place in golf holes that float in cloud islands. While this might sound almost idyllic, the truth is something closer to a Bioshock Infinite kind of deal.

The world of Vertiginous Golf is rather dark and desolate, and the game features a few tidbits of narrative to help you explore the world’s rich backstory. This is something that’s hardly seen in a sports game, let alone in a mini-golf game. If you like the steampunk aesthetic and are interested in a fun exploration game, then this game might be right up your alley.

Unique and Odd

Every hole in Vertiginous Golf feels like its own universe, where all reason and understanding of the basics of reality are left behind. The game also features quite a lot of verticality in its holes, which can be as entertaining as it can be frustrating, especially when the camera doesn’t want to cooperate.

To create the game’s dystopian setting, developers Kinelco and Lone Elk Creative took some inspiration from other dystopian classics, like A Clockwork Orange. The characters you meet in Vertiginous Golf speak in their own version of English, adding some quirks and unusual expressions that might be fun at first, but will feel a bit hamfisted after a few hours of gameplay.

The idea behind Vertiginous Golf is a fun one: what if we take something as mundane as miniature golf and we place it in the most interesting setting possible? The sad truth is that the game never reaches its full potential, as it’s held back by some obnoxious design flaws that sour the overall experience.

The clumsy camera and flimsy controls create a sense of artificial difficulty, where almost every hole can feel unfair. There’s a lot of potential in Vertiginous Golf, but it needs a strong reevaluation of its core mechanics before it can become the game it so desperately wants to be.

Pros

  • Interesting setting
  • Some holes look amazingly creative
  • If the controls and camera allow it, the game can be quite fun

Cons

  • The camera can get lost in the more complex holes
  • Unresponsive controls
  • Obnoxious characters
