So bad it is good is the best way to describe Unnatural: Benighted. I was legit laughing and smiling the whole time I was on this adventure. If you read the official description of the game, the developer has this big legal paragraph about how this is an original game and any similarities to other characters in unintentional… yeah right! That right there sets the tone for a truly wacky and crazy adventure that you will find yourself on here. Although the further I got into this game, it made me wonder, why the heck hadn't there been an official game based on this show.

Carry On My Wayward Son!

At the end of the day, Unnatural: Benighted is clearly designed to be a game based on the awesome TV show, Supernatural. Supernatural is one of my favorite TV shows of all time, and had it been around just a little earlier, I am positive we would have gotten a game for the PlayStation 2 or perhaps even the PlayStation 3 based on the adventures of Sam and Dean Winchester. As I said, the developer goes to great lengths to protect themselves from the CW, and they even say that they are not responsible for how players interpret these characters as…. That is awesome and a great way to cover your ass!

On A Steel Horse I Ride

Our main characters in Unnatural: Benighted are called Sim and Dan, which sure does sound a lot like Sam and Dean! However, these are not brothers; they are just friends. People have been going missing, including Sim’s wife, and a demon is responsible. Now, with the help of Dan, Sim needs to put a stop to this demon and save his wife. At the end of the day, for a Supernatural rip-off, this more than gets the job done, and I found myself pretty entertained by the story, and this is certainly an adventure that you could imagine the Winchester boys going on.

Cas, Are You There?

The presentation of Unnatural: Benighted is not terrible, but it does have a very low-budget feel to it, but to be honest with you, that kind of adds to the quirky and janky charm that this game has. However, what really made me laugh my butt off was the voice acting. First of all, massive props for having voice acting, but it is 100 percent in the category of it is so bad, it is good. I found myself laughing over and over again at the way that lines were delivered. If some of these were the best takes, I would have loved to have heard the ones that did not make the cut. I will say that the game does have a very “Supernatural” vibe about the presentation, just in a lower budget, janky kind of way, and that is something I think is kind of awesome.

Just Keep Shooting

As you would probably expect, the gameplay of Unnatural: Benighted is a bit on the janky side as well. This is a 3rd person shooter, kind of like Resident Evil 4, but with about 2 percent of the polish. You just go around, blasting all the monsters that come your way until you reach the demon at the end. You are probably going to get through this in one sitting, and to be fair, that is the perfect amount of time for a game like this. I did not have this happen to me, but I did hear that it was possible to soft lock your game, so you have to start over. I never felt any real challenge, to be honest, I just kept pressing forward, killing anything that got in my way.

I can see why some people may play this and think that it is complete trash, but I still had a fun time with Unnatural: Benighted. Granted, I am a massive Supernatural fan, so I got a huge kick out of the way that this game just did not care and was clearly supposed to be that; heck, it verges on parody due to the writing and voice acting. If you are not a Supernatural fan, there is no need at all for you to play this, as you will not be able to look over the obvious flaws the game has. However, if you are a fan, give this a try; I am sure you will get a few laughs out of it.

Pros:

  • The Supernatural influences are awesome
  • The voice acting is unintentionally hilarious
  • Shooting monsters is fun
  • This is as close to a Supernatural games as we have right now!

Cons:

  • This is a very janky and unpolished game
  • If you’re not a fan of Supernatural, this will just be a turd and not a polished turd for you!
