Toodee and Topdee

Toodee and Topdee is an adorable game with fantastic mechanics that really push it far beyond and aside from any other game. If you are after a platformer with adorable characters, fantastic gameplay mechanics and a colorful and well realized world, then you are going to fall in love with this brilliant creation by dietzribi. A puzzle platformer for the ages, Toodee and Topdee is easy to get into and easier to get stuck in. Prepare yourself for some fun and let’s jump into it.

Gameplay

So, this game is a puzzle platformer kind of like Super Meat Boy or Celeste but requires a smidgen more thought than planning out a path and blasting through it. In this game, you, and maybe a friend, take control of two characters, Toodee and Topdee.

Toodee is a little blue creature who is viewed in 2D, hence the name, and he takes care of the running and jumping. Topdee, who is viewed from top down, can alter aspects of the environment, making it easier for Toodee to traverse the maps.

I must be honest; this mechanic absolutely blew me away. Like The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Toodee and Topdee bring an incredibly fresh and unique style to their game that I cannot say I’ve experienced before. The objective of the game is to solve the many, very difficult challenges that await the characters. Using the skills that you learn; you must traverse a treacherous land together and put things right.

As I mentioned, you are able to play this game alone or with a friend with a set up that best suit you. This requires tight and concise play where you always know what’s going on and that you have an agreed upon plan that you can enact on moment’s notice. This is the makings of a truly ingenious game that requires focus and commitment, lest you fail miserably. I’m getting excited just talking about it.

Story

Your objective is to find the semicolon missing from the code of the universe. The reason that balance has been jeopardized in the land and huge bosses are awaiting you for big combat scenes. Unravel the mysteries of the cosmos and learn great secrets. It’s a simple premise but the story comes second to a game that has divine gameplay such as this.

Art Style

The art style in this title is charming and simplistic. It doesn’t try too hard to do or show anything that isn’t conveyed brilliantly in its minimalistic style. Like many games of its genre, its focus is on theming and how easy it is to see what’s going on, to follow the action and complete the trials. In both the art style and the writing, there appears to be brilliant humor that pours through every frame.
