Tokyo Chronos is a Virtual Reality game developed by MyDearest Inc. and published by Sekai Project, it was released in March 2019 for Playstation 4 and Windows. The game is one of the earlier titles of a studio that would become a leader in the virtual reality gaming industry in japans. A Virtual Reality machine such as PSVR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and similar products is necessary to enjoy the game.

A Completely Different Reality

Tokyo Chronos is a visual novel game that found immense success and a tremendous appraisal from the Japanese gaming industry upon its release. Critics, streamers, and YouTubers all agreed that this was the epitome of what visual novels could be at the time. It is the equivalent of a Triple-A title with tried and true talented cast, and extensive gameplay.

The game tells the story of eight Japanese students that find themselves alone in Shibuya, Tokyo, and their search for answers. The game starts with a gruesome image of bloodied hands, and a message that reads “I am dead. Who killed me?”, prompting players to quickly explore the dystopian reality they are in. Background story reveals that in this world, a mysterious parallel universe dubbed “Chronos World”, in which people would be stuck for years inside before an unknown event sends them back into the world.

A Detailed and Intricate Visual Novel

For those unfamiliar with the genre of virtual novels, Tokyo Chrono can be a strenuous gaming experience. The title has around fifteen hours of content, which are heavily, heavily narrative-driven, there isn’t really much “playing” the game. Here the focus is developing an intricate, detailed, and rich background. The amount of information can make the game tedious for some players, it provides non-stop lore, directions, and dialogue. The fact that the game is bettered experienced with the original audio, soundtrack, and dialogue makes playing with subtitles an active reading exercise.

One of the best parts of the game is its amazing artwork, and the anime-like aesthetics, which really shake up the point-and-click visual novel experience that is prevalent in the western gaming community. Finally, like most games of the genre players are able to influence the outcome of the story by the decisions they during the game. To be fair, there are fairly limited choices to be made, and consequently, the outcomes might not feel as unique and rewarding as some other titles, however, Tokyo Chronos makes an amazing job making up for it with impeccable storytelling.

Conclusion

Tokyo Chronos is a very strong title, that has taken the visual novel genre to new heights on virtual reality. The point-and-click genre has a bright future, and fans of What Remains of Edith Finch, The Wolf Among Us, Telltale Series, and The Great Ace Attorney series will love this game.
