Savior of The Abyss

An isometric horror game with some seriously eerie atmosphere, Savior of the Abyss is a great title that will send shivers down your spine at every step of the way. From the offset, is clear that this game does everything it can to unnerve you, and its stellar presentation is one of the things that make it so effective at its task.

Despite its simple graphics, Savior of the Abyss offers an impressive amount of scares and unsettling imagery. Its punishing difficulty only makes this game even more suspenseful, so be ready to face your worst fears if you decide to give this one a chance.

2D Horror

The first thing you’ll notice about Savior of the Abyss is that the game features a somewhat simple presentation. The isometric point of view and basic 2D sprites have proved rather effective for horror games in the past, with titles like Yume Nikki and Darkwood being the perfect examples of that.

After waking up in the basement of a dilapidated hospital, Stella finds herself involved in forces beyond her comprehension. It will be up to the player to guide her to safety, avoiding the multitude of instant-death traps that litter the halls of this strange place.

Unforgiving and spooky throughout, Savior of the Abyss has an old-school point-and-click adventure feel to it that makes it all the more difficult. Considering how stingy the game is with checkpoints and how easy it is to die, this is a game that can only be recommended if you have the patience of a saint. Or if the plot grips you from the start.

Lovecraftian Gameplay

The horrors that lurk in the dark corners of Savior of the Abyss seem to be inspired by the works of H. P. Lovecraft. If you’re familiar with the myths of Cthulhu and other disturbing horrors from beyond our dimension, then you’ll find some familiar faces – or tentacles – here.

This surreal approach to horror gives the game an otherworldly feeling, which, together with the gloomy ambiance and low-definition sprites, turns Savior of the Abyss into a surprisingly scary experience.

One thing to note is that this is a punishingly hard game that will have you dying over and over again. Try and error is a fundamental part of Savior of the Abyss’ gameplay, and checkpoint locations are few and far between. To avoid death, be extra sure to check every nook and cranny in your surroundings: you never know when a trap might lay in hiding.

Minimalist Visuals

In a time when HD graphics and richly detailed models are becoming the norm for horror games, it takes some guts to develop a 2D sprite-based game like this one. Luckily for fans and developers alike, it still proves to be incredibly effective at crafting a proper horror atmosphere.

Perhaps it’s due to the isometric point of view, or due to the low quality of the textures and dimly lit hallways, but there’s an ever-present sense of dread as you explore this game’s old hospital.

Whatever the case, this game is a terrific example of substance over style: a competent horror game that, despite its cheesy plot, delivers some amazingly effective scares.

9

Savior of the Abyss might suffer from some unintentionally funny dialogue, but when it wants to be scary, it is absolutely scary. The isometric view and punishing difficulty turn this game into a timeless horror experience that’s fit for any fan of the genre.

  • Excellent sprite work
  • Interesting puzzles
  • Terrific handling of its horror elements
