The Cycle: Frontier is one of the most exciting free to play shooters to be released in 2022. I do have to say that my thoughts today are very early as I have only played the game for around a day before writing this, but I did want to get my initial thoughts down on this. One of the things that I think is pretty neat about this game is that it is not just a PvP type experience, it is PvP mixed with PvE into something the developers are calling PvPvE extraction style shooter!

Playing As Stinky Pete!

If you get that reference, well done! The premise of The Cycle: Frontier is pretty awesome. There is this alien planet that is one of the most dangerous places in the galaxy, but it is home to some very valuable resources and you are a prospector that is going to be hired to complete various objectives by one of the three large factions that want as much as this planet has to offer as possible. It is a cool sci-fi type setting and something that I think has a lot of potential to be expanded upon.

Completing Your Objective!

Each match that you will play in The Cycle: Frontier is said to have at least four main objectives that you are fighting to complete. These range from things like getting from point a to b, getting an object, and king of the hill style gameplay scenarios. There will be other events and things that pop up during your game too. You are playing to earn points, but as well as earning points by doing these objectives, you also have to escape the planet before time is up too!

Playing Your Way

There are different ways that you can play The Cycle: Frontier. You can go at it solo which is what I have done in the short time I have been playing the game. There are 20 players in a match and you can also play in duos or squads if you prefer. It is similar in many ways to what Fortnite is offering and that rings true for the battle pass and the way you can get new weapons and upgrades as you play.

Do Not Feed The Wildlife

One of the things that I think is very cool about The Cycle: Frontier is that while most of the action and fighting will be between you and other players. This world is home to a whole host of crazy looking creatures that all want to eat you. So, you could be in the middle of a firefight when some monster walks by and decides to get involved, this adds another element to the game and it is something I have had fun with. Sneaking up on another player who is fighting a monster, cheap shotting them once the monster has done most of the dirty work, and then getting out of there.

I know that we have an abundance of free to play shooters these days, but I do think that The Cycle: Frontier is doing enough to stand out and offer something a bit different. While I say “different” I do think that there is more than enough familiarity with this game where people who play Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Call of Duty: Warzone will be able to jump in and have some fun right away.

Pros:

I like the setting and the lore that they have going on
You can play this and have fun with it without spending any money
It is fun how the wildlife on this planet can play such a huge role in matches
There is a good variety to the objectives you have to complete in a match

Cons:

I do worry about how much money will be required to be spent in order to properly enjoy the game long term
I have not had the chance to play this with any of my friends as of writing so I cannot say how well it works when playing with friends
