Tad the Lost Explorer is one of those games that for me came out of nowhere. I am not too familiar with this character if I am being honest with you, but I know Tad and his crew are very popular with people all over the world (especially in Europe from what I have heard) and I was excited to check this out as they do not really make games like this anymore so it is something of a throwback in terms of the kind of 3D adventure game it is and I am very excited about that.

The Quest For The Emerald Tablet

One of the more interesting things about Tad the Lost Explorer is that depending on where you get the game or where you live, it may or may not have the subtitle, The Quest for the Emerald Tablet which is the name of an animated movie the game is based on…. Or vice versa, I am not 100 percent sure, to be honest with you. Anyway, Tad needs to save his buddies and the only way that he can do this is by heading all over the globe in search of the mythical Emerald Tablet. It is a fun story and one that I think fits the style very well.

A Bright Adventure Come To Life

Now, I know nothing about the movie or the series in general that Tad the Lost Explorer is based on. However, from the trailer I watched of the recent movie, I do feel like they have managed to capture the look and feel of the movie very well with the presentation of the game. It is bright, and colorful and it has a ton of personality. I like how the game has some very varied locations such as the majesties of Cairo and the hustle and bustle of Chicago. It is great stuff and I like how fluid and smooth the whole game is. It is probably not going to win any awards, but I feel like they have captured the spirit very well.

Pitfall In 3D

Now, this may be a hard reference for some of you guys, but Tad the Lost Explorer gives me some major Pitfall vibes. I am not talking about the epic Activision original, but the 2D action platformer, The Mayan Adventure that came out in the mid-90s for the consoles of the day. That game was not all that great, to be honest with you. However, this game gives me that same kind of vibe, but in a 3D way. It is a 3D action platformer where you have to go all over the globe, platforming, puzzle solving, and taking down bad guys and dangerous creatures that are all over the place. It may not be groundbreaking in its game design, but it is fun and feels like a game that would have been out on the PlayStation 2 or the original Xbox.

No doubt, Tad the Lost Explorer is going to be a hard sell for some people and many will pass it off as just a silly kid’s game to tie in with an animated movie. To be fair, I could get that. However, I think if you like the action platformers that were around in the early to mid-00s, I am sure you will find a lot of enjoyment in this game here. It is one that could be worth checking out if you are in the mood for something a little less deep than the latest triple-A title.
