StarCraft II: Nova Covert Ops is a downloadable expansion that offers a unique story set after the main one found in the original game. This title provides players with an interesting linear tale where you take control of Nova, a psionic operative who must complete a series of missions for her commander. There is a lot to like about this game as it tries a few new things that really lend to its uniqueness. If you are a fan of this franchise, you have come to the right place. Let’s get into it.
Gameplay
So, the gameplay in StarCraft II: Nova Covert Ops follows the tried and tested formula set out by its predecessors. There is a significant amount of base building and exploration, like you’d find in Age of Empires, but there’s also an XCOM 2 inspired segments that have you take control of Nova as she battles or sneaks through enemy lines on solo missions. This diversity was very well received and there were even a few segments, like the highway chase scene, that absolutely blew my mind as it stretched the capabilities of the game engine.
Most of the solo missions follow Nova running around attempting to take out as many enemies as possible while avoiding traps, cones of vision, and overwhelming enemy numbers. In the Zerg missions, with the right equipment, you can become a monster killing machine and its amazing fun.
There is an element of characters customization in this title but it is not over the top. It lets you have fun with loadouts but keeps the concept of the character the same.
Story
The story in this is rather straightforward. You go on several missions and take on the enemies that you are directed to. Much of the story is told through dialogue heavy cutscenes, but the saving grace is that the voice acting and world building is absolutely top notch. I will say, I was really enjoying this more personal version of the game and am a bit upset that it was so short. There was a lot more this could have offered. But, if you are looking for something that tries to be a bit different, this is for you. This is a clear nod back to the times that Blizzard really put their all into their titles.
Visuals
The visuals of Nova Covert Ops are really good. Everything on screen is nice and clear and easy to see. The CG cutscenes are gorgeous and the maps that you play on are well-designed and unique. I found this to be a game that was very easy to look at, think of a very high budget Command & Conquer.
A fantastic foray into a small, story driven campaign following a lesser-known character from the Starcraft lore. If you like strategy games, StarCraft or both, you will love this game.
