He's a demon who'd rather do good than the devil's bidding, and if that sounds familiar, you haven't heard the half of it. A gun in each hand and a blade on his back, Spawn hunts escapees from hell, harvesting souls to spend on power-ups. You could call it Devil May Spam, but Armageddon doesn't compare to the game it shamelessly copies. The action isn't bad--just appallingly generic. Spawn's symbiotic costume and profane powers could've been put to more clever use than what you get here: fireballs and obligatory bullet time. And it's hard to be enthusiastic about fighting endless waves of cornball fiends seemingly snatched from the margins of some fifth-grader's math homework. One of the bosses, for example, is a demented, silly-looking bulldozer with a perverse compulsion to expose his one weak spot. And before you accuse me of singling out Bullydozer's monumentally bad design, I should add that there's an ape with a robotic arm (perhaps for hurling feces at lethal velocity?). Even those who are hard up for high-flying action should find their fix elsewhere.

My first impression of Spawn was not a good one; I've never been a fan of the comic, and I'm one of the few who wasn't all that enamored with Devil May Cry, the game it very obviously draws its inspiration from. Now, after spending the six hours it took me to finish the game, I can at least confirm that it's the best Spawn outing to date...which isn't saying much. Armageddon's got a nice engine and good controls, but the levels are dull, the action is repetitive, and the camera can be a real pain. A rental at best.

Spawn went from bad to worse for me. While I applaud the absurdity of things such as the Spider-Tank and the Bullydozer bosses, I'm depressed by the cliche 'puzzles,' the horrid level design (some levels are literally a bare room with respawning enemies), and the megaboring action. I stopped reading Spawn when that stupid cyborg gorilla Cy-Gor first appeared. I should have followed my youthful instinct and bailed when Cy-Gor appeared in the game, since it just went downhill from there.

Game Reviews

Although the concept behind Spawn is a very cool one, with gameplay, plot, graphics and sound that are very faithful to the comic books, the Armageddon just doesn't manage to pull it all together for the over the top game it should have been.

The game places you on the edge of Armageddon as Spawn tried to fight off the hordes of Hell, unleashed by a preemptive strike launched by wayward angels, and a super assassin created by Spawn's rival Jason Wynn.
Although the plot sounds quite interesting, it does little to drive the game itself. Instead you find yourself meandering through endless levels taking on a bizarre yet rather repetitive bunch of bad guys until you get to a cut scene that is packed full of plot that is seemingly disconnected from your gameplay.

Controlling Spawn can be both fun and painfully annoying. The best part of the game is the incredible weapons selection, which includes guns of all types, Spawn's way-cool green-hued Hell Powers and his Chains. The chain attacks can be really neat looking, but aren't very effective in the brawls that seem to ensue in every level. The game also incorporated Spawn's seething cloak, though it only appears when he is using it to glide around the screen.

The frustration of Spawn comes mostly when you are trying to move him around tight spots, or see what the heck is going on right in front of him when he is near a wall. Although this is a typical problem with third-person games, it seems much more apparent in Spawn. This blocked view is only exasperated by a healthy dose of platform-to-platform jumping required to beat the game.

The sound in Spawn is quite impressive, relying on the actors who gave voice to Spawn for HBO and the graphics do a good job of capturing the snake like movement of Spawn and his hellacious weapons.\

Spawn Armageddon is a lot of fun to play when it isn't acting up but unfortunately it seems to act up a lot. Unless you are a big fan of Todd McFarlane or in desperate need of a game that you can beat in an easy day, I'd give Spawn a pass.
