Sonic Colors

Sonic Colors was released in 2010 by Sega for the Nintendo Switch. As with the previous Sonic franchise games, your goal is to gather gold rings, defeat enemies, and stop Sonic’s nemesis Doctor Eggman from completing his evil schemes. However, this time, Eggman attempts to enslave an entire alien race called the Wisps and take over the planet. Join Sonic and the gang to stop Doctor Eggman and explore all that this space-themed platformer has to offer!

Vivid Environments

Sonic Colors has fantastic visual quality, especially considering its time of release. The game’s primary setting is the engaging Interstellar Amusement Park, a chain of five planets with their own unique theme and levels. The classic shifting between side-scrolling and third-person perspectives is indicative of every Sonic game. Still, it allows the player to experience some variety between early levels and boss battles.

Planets and Power-Ups

As the player progresses throughout the Sonic Colors environment, more planets become unlocked to further the story along. In addition, the player can activate power-ups through the newly introduce alien race, the Wisps. There are eight different Wisps in total, each with its own special perk. Their color indicates which ability they have:

  • The white wisps let the player get a speed boost
  • The green wisp lets Sonic hover in the air and dash across lines of rings
  • The cyan wisp turns Sonic into a laser that can bounce off solid surfaces and travel through power lines
  • The orange wisp lets Sonic turn into a rocket and blast up high into the sky
  • The yellow wisp allows Sonic to drill underground and through water
  • The pink wisp lets Sonic stick to walls and ceilings, as well as perform a high-velocity spin dash
  • The blue wisp lets Sonic turn blue blocks into blue rings, and vice versa
  • The purple wisp allows Sonic to gobble his way through anything in his path

Multiplayer Mode

One of the not-so-widely accepted aspects of Sonic Colors was the multiplayer feature called Eggman’s Sonic Simulator. The players can control robots designed after Sonic characters or their Mii characters as their avatars. Players are tasked with completing a series of levels, which can be unlocked by collecting Red Star Rings hidden throughout the previous levels. After completing the multiplayer mode, players can transform Sonic into Super Sonic, an invincible version of Sonic that has infinite boost ability (though the perk is lost once the ring counter hits zero).

While this idea sounds fun in theory, many players report that these multiplayer levels are increasingly frustrating and less engaging than some solo missions. In addition, some of the increasingly difficult levels can be hard to approach as a new gamer, despite the childlike graphics and art style.

Sonic’s Future

If you’re feeling nostalgic for the 2010s, Sonic Colors is a great game to pick up again. The graphics have held up tremendously well, and the engaging gameplay keeps you coming back for more. The characters are fun, the plot isn’t overly cheesy, the music and audio received high praise, and the addition of the Wisps power-ups is effective.

Pros:

  • Engaging gameplay, fun power-ups, impressive graphics

Cons:

  • Levels can get repetitive, multiplayer is challenging to pick up on
