Sonic Chaos

Robotnik never gives up. His latest twisted plot to take over the world involves, of course, the theft of the Chaos Emeralds. Dr. R has already snatched the Red Chaos Emeralds, and now he's trying to grab the rest of the Emeralds in order to build the deadly weapons he needs to carry out his sinister scheme. This predictable plot gets an assortment of fun new twists in this excellent hand-held adventure for the speedy Sonic.

Supersonic

Dr. Robotnik is apparently fixated on Chaos Emeralds. Although that's bad news for Sonic, Tails, and their fuzzy buddies, it's good news for fans of the Hedgehog saga. In this new adventure, gamers romp through six entertaining and entirely new zones (each with three Acts - two action and one boss).

In each of the zones, Sonic or Tails has to ricochet past all kinds of obstacles, some old, some new. In addition to the usual loop-the-loops, ramps, corkscrews, and vacuum tubes, there are also mazes of breakable blocks, underwater rivers, and, of course, a new assortment of hidden rooms and other secrets.

Even better, this cart boasts some new power-ups for Sonic and Tails that give the action a change of pace. Hop on board a Pogo Spring to leap extra high, or grab Rocket Shoes and jet through the skies. Invincibility Monitors, 1-ups, and Ring Monitors still abound.

The lost Chaos Emeralds are hidden in another dimension, which also happens to be within the Bonus Rounds. When Sonic grabs 100 Rings, he enters a Bonus Round and has one minute to find a hidden Chaos Emerald and collect tons of Rings for as many 1 -ups as possible. Tails cannot enter the Bonus Rounds.

Heads or Tails

The game play in this cart is similar to the other Sonic games, but it's the first time that Game Gear gamers can play as either Sonic or Tails. In the dynamic duo, each character has unique abilities. Sonic handles just as well as ever, with easy controls. In addition to the Rocket Shoes, he's got his standard repertoire of moves, including his Super Spin Dash move from Sonic 2. Tails is also easy to control as he saunters into play with all of Sonic's moves, including the Spin Dash. Tails doesn't have Rocket Shoes, but he can fly and swim using his tail.

In keeping with the high standards set in the prior games, Sonic Chaos has crisp, clear, colorful graphics. Each Zone's backgrounds are well-drawn, with lots of details. Both Sonic and Tails have amusing animations that capture their sassy personalities. The sharp sound effects and perky music blend in nicely, although they won't win a Grammy Award.

Sonic Chaos isn't nearly as tough as Sonic's first Game Gear adventure, which is good or bad depending on how much you like to sweat while you play games. Instead of a difficulty setting, Sega's made it much easier to get through the game as Tails. Beginners might find Chaos challenging, but intermediate and advanced gamers won't have any trouble beating the game.

Sonic Boom!

Sonic Chaos takes that winning Sonic formula, makes it new and interesting with a few variations, and comes up with yet another great Sonic cart. Although it's not as tough as some of the other Sonic adventures, it's still a cart that fans of the hogmeister are gonna wanna roll with.

ProTips:

  • Use the Pogo Stick to Leap to unreachable areas In the Sleeping Egg Zone. Leap high on the stick, and then get even higher by vaulting off at the top of the leap.
  • In the first Aqua Lake Zone, you can easily get through the level by going to the bottom and then swimming through the water from gate to gate.
  • In the Mecha Green Hill Zone, Sonic and Tails can bounce off the sludge sea at the bottom of the level.
  • Bounce down through the floor at the beginning of the Mecha Green Hill Zone, and then head to the right for a 1-up. To escape from this room, Spin Dash through the wall on the right.
  • The big area in the middle of the second Gigapolis Zone is filled with Rings.
  • To beat the Gigapolls Zone boss, leap and bounce the snake creature on the head.
  • In the Sleeping Egg Zone, Sonic can leap through panels with Or. Robotnlk on them.
  • Sonic and Tails have different abilities. When Sonic collects 100 Rings, he goes to the Bonus Rounds, where he can collect lots of 1-ups. Tails can't go to the Bonus Rounds, but he can use his tail to fly, an invaluable skill.
  • There's a hidden 1-up In Act 1 of the Turquoise Hill Zone. The easiest way to find it is to play as Tails and fly to the hidden opening Just below the Invincibility Monitor on the ledge. The 1-up is in the tunnel.
  • To defeat Robotnik's Button Boss at the end of the Turquoise Hill Zone, just bop him on the head eight times. Remember that Sonic can use the button to safely ricochet over the boss.

Game Reviews

The hog with an attitude is back once again on the Game Gear for the third time. What an adventure this one is going to be! First off, you can either play as Sonic or Tails. The difference being that using Sonic is the "Hard" mode. Tails is the "Easy" mode - having continues, more lives, and the ability to fly about the screen! However, Tails cannot enter the bonus stages to rescue the Chaos emeralds, which is crucial in order to beat the game, for Robotnik has stolen the red emerald!

You will be simply amazed at what this cart has packed in - six stages that are filled with tons of hidden surprises as well as some neat tricks. Hey, even the Sonic 2 Genesis version Corkscrew effect is present!

The stages follow in the footsteps of Sonic 2, being very diverse and filled with loads of hidden surprises and power-ups. The Bosses are also challenging and, for once, not just Robotnik in some goofy machine. They are now specialized high-tech terrors that may appear harmless enough, but are really quite deadly! As we have stated before, the graphics are simply incredible, and the speed is twice as fast as the previous versions of Sonic for the Game Gear. The only flaw that could have made a nice feature is the absence of a two-player option, using the link-up cord, each player having his/her own view of the action. Put that aside, and you have one phenomenal title!

Turquoise Hill Zone

Once again, the Green Hill zone is reborn! Filled with twisting loops and the ever-popular corkscrew effect, you will dash about the place, finding hidden items galore! Be careful of the Boss, he may seem harmless, but...

Gigapolis Zone

This technological stage is similar to the Starlight Zone in the original Sonic. This one does add some new twists, like a slanted metal surface that you need to race across at the highest speeds or you will tumble off!

Sleeping Egg Zone

Now here's a kooky zone where you can actually bust through the walls, ceilings and floors! Also, this is where the pogo stick first appears, which allows you to find all sorts of helpful power-ups. Use them throughout your journey.

Filled with breakable walls and enemies, this level proves that... well... it can still be hell trying to find an exit to this place!

Mecha Green Hill Zone

This is definitely one level that will make you scream "cheap" at the top of your lungs! The slanted surfaces are back. If you don't run, you'll slip off and tumble to certain death! There are also plenty of small platforms that float about, waiting for you to jump on them.

Being the hardest level of the game, you must be careful where you go and where you jump to - it could mean the end!

Aqua Planet Zone

Where would a Sonic game be without a treacherous, dragging underwater sequence? While looking for items, you might encounter a door, that when opened, will pull you into the room via the water's current! Be careful when you're in here! Don't forget to hit the surface of the water for a breath of fresh air, for if you linger too long, you're history!

Electric Egg Zone

Enter the final level of the game! The whole stage is set up like a gigantic computer chip board. There are no enemies, just nasty pitfalls, plenty of lasers, and mine carts that propel you downward at high speeds! Plus, there is a mess of tubes that need to be worked through as well!

Toward the end, there is a tube maze that you need to navigate through in order to reach the final Boss!

Will that evil Dr. Robotnik ever give up? He's up to his old tricks again in Sonic Chaos for Game Gear, and the fate of South Island and all of its inhabitants, including Sonic, is in jeopardy.

Dr. Robotnik has stolen the Red Chaos Emerald and has his eyes set on the others. Sonic's job is to go through each zone, attempting to collect 100 rings in the process. As soon as he grabs the 100th ring, he is then transported to a parallel universe in which he has one minute to find the hidden Emerald. To gain possession of the final Emerald, Sonic must beat Dr. Robotnik. And to restore order to the universe, Sonic must get every Emerald.

Sonic's bud, Tails, makes an encore appearance in Sonic Chaos, after helping Sonic take care of Robotnik in Sonic 2. Players can choose to play as either Sonic or Tails, altering the level of difficulty. Playing as Tails offers an easier route through the game, since Tails can fly over deadly obstacles that Sonic would have to face. But only Sonic can reach the special stages to find the Emeralds.

Sonic Chaos contains six new zones, each with three acts. The acts are filled with new enemies, traps, and bosses, but still retain the secret passages and hidden power-ups that were so frequent in the earlier Sonic games.

For Sonic, it's time to pull those little red sneakers out of the closet and lace 'em up tight. For you, it's time to practice that Super Spin Attack and put an end to Dr. Robotnik's evil ways once again.

The Game Gear keeps on getting better and better all the time. The graphics seem a little darker than the other Sonic titles, but they are just as crystal clear. This is the ideal way to play Sonic on the go. Having Tails back is a good idea, too. If you have a Game Gear, I would seriously recommend this cart to anyone. It has the game play of the 16-Bit ones, and the fun factor to match. Sonic is better than ever.

Wow, another Sonic game. But hey, this is a blast to play and that's what really matters. Sonic and Tails are an excellent team-up. The game looks and plays 16-Bit with intricate levels and kooky craziness that all Sonic fans are sure to love. The music is decent as far as Game Gear games go and the game is a sure fire bring-along for any tedious road trip. This one is a definite must-buy.

Sonic joins the recent crop of exceptional games for the Game Gear. It's a colorful game with the great game play that made it one of Sega's most popular titles. The graphics are just as good as any other portable Sonic title. Like the 16-Bit games, this has super huge levels with tons of areas to look around for hidden secrets, so you're guaranteed to play it more than once. Fans of Sonic series will not be disappointed.

Another installment of Sonic! This one is one of my new favorites! The action is typically Sonic-very fast and furious. The graphics are unbelievably crisp, allowing you even more control the action. You can play as either Sonic or Tails, too! The levels are nice and long, so you won't get bored with this game for a while! Also of note are the Bosses who are pretty tough! A worthy addition to your GG library!

The continuing adventures of the world's fastest hedgehog make a lightning quick return to the Game Gear. Unlike previous versions of Sonic the Hedgehog for Sega's portable, this time you can play as the cuddly Tails.

When you hear the word "portable", you often think of a sized-down game. Not true in this case. Sonic and Tails GG has as much adventure as the previous Genesis versions, and maybe even more. The graphics are outstanding, and a whole complement of secret areas to find make Sonic and Tails GG one of the better action games for your portable. So if you like Sonic and his buddy, you are in for a real treat. Things look bright. It could come here very soon.
