Slipstream has been on PC for a couple of years now, but the reason I am talking about the game today is that it is now coming to console. One of the best things about this game is that it is coming out on everything so no console owners have to miss out on this awesome arcade racer. I have spent a ton of time with the PC version of the game so I thought I would let you guys know what to expect when this drops on console in Spring 2022.

The Grand Tour

No, I am not talking about the Amazon Prime show, but the main game mode that Slipstream has on offer. This is an epic race across all kinds of fun looking tracks, each one with its own style and personality. There are branching paths for you to take so there is plenty of replay value here and there are even rivals that will challenge your racing skills. It is like an evolution of what the Outrun series offered.

But Wait!!! There Is More

The World Tour mode may be the main game mode that Slipstream has to offer. There are five other game modes for you to test your racing skills with here. You have Grand Prix, Cannonball, Battle Royale, Time Trial, and Single Race. It is a great mixture of game modes and there is enough from both a single player and a multiplayer point of view to keep you busy for a long time.

Back In 1995

The whole style of Slipstream is what drew me to it initially. The developer has not been shy in regards to Sega’s Outrun being a massive inspiration for the game and that is very clear here. It has the look of what a later 90s Outrun may have looked like had Sega kept on going with the series. There are 20 tracks to race on from nice and bright ones to tracks at night. As well as looking awesome, the game has a tremendous soundtrack that honestly could not be any more fitting for the racing action!

More Like Outrun 2 Than Outrun

One of the most interesting things about Slipstream is the way that it plays. You have five cars to choose from, each one having its own stats. I will admit that I came into this because of the awesome visuals, expecting a racing game like the original Outrun. However, this actually plays much more like a modern arcade style racer and I say that as a positive. It plays quite similar to OutRun 2 in the way that you can drift and it just adds a bit more skill to the overall experience.

I have put in many, many hours to the PC version and I am pretty sure I will be picking this up for the Nintendo Switch… and maybe the PlayStation 5 too. This is one of the best arcade racers to come out in the last few years and I think that the way it pays homage to the original Outrun, as well as Outrun 2, is very cool indeed. While the score I am giving this game is based on the PC version, I see no reason at all why the console versions would score any less.

Pros:

I love the whole retro 90s style that this game has
It has a pumping and awesome soundtrack
The gameplay feels tight and it clicks very quickly
There are plenty of game modes for you to enjoy

Cons:

I cannot get to the bottom of if there is going to be a physical version or not
I am not exactly sure if they are adding anything to the upcoming console release
