Shin Megami Tensei IV is the fourth game in a popular demon slaying series. In this game, you play Flynn, a Samurai tasked with protecting the kingdom of Mikado by killing demons that threaten to overtake it. In order to do this, the player uses other demons to fight for them, and can merge those demons into newer and stronger fighters.
The ability to merge demons and create your own fighter is by far the most fascinating part of the game. Although there is a fairly developed storyline and a full cast of characters, they aren’t necessary to keep the player entertained. The demon building side of the game alone is strong enough to carry it.
Similar to Past Shin Megami Tensei Games
Shin Megami Tensei IV doesn’t have any story connection to past games, but it was specifically designed to feel like the original game, Shin Megami Tensei. It uses the same turn-based battle system. The battle system is unique from other systems in that both players and demons can exploit weaknesses in the other party, causing them to gain or lose turns.
More Approachable
Shin Megami Tensei games are known for being incredibly difficult. Shin Megami Tensei IV however is one of the more approachable games, making it possible for new players to dip their toe in without getting too frustrated. The endgame is still filled with demons that can one-shot the player, sending them to their untimely death. This doesn’t necessarily spell the end for players. At the River Styx, the demon that guards the path of the dead, is completely willing to revive players if they have the cash for it. This makes the game a lot more approachable for new players, while still being enjoyable for players who prefer a challenge.
Demon Fusion System
The Demon fusion system is by far the most entertaining part of the game, so it is worth going into detail about it. In order to capture a demon, you must first defeat them in combat. Demons in the game come in a full range of colors and styles, from cuddly and cute to downright terrifying. They also have different skills and abilities. Once a demon is defeated, players must win the demon over to their side and form a contract. This usually involves presenting the demon with gifts they find acceptable. Finally, the player can level the demons up by taking them in battle, or fuse them with another demon to create a new and more powerful one. The game offers help for the demon fusion system through Mido, an AI who can walk you through every possible demon combination in the game.
Some Disappointments
Although the game is overall good, there are a few areas that could be improved. The story itself isn’t all that interesting. It features a variety of teens with typical teenager attitudes. Although there are a few tense moments in the game, overall the plot isn’t that important to the game.
The exploration system also falls flat, with a map reduced to simple icons that don’t compare to the rest of the exquisitely drawn game. These details are minor however, and shouldn’t discourage people from trying the game.
Shin Megami Tensei IV is a creative and entertaining RPG that will appeal to anyone who likes dungeon crawling and creative gameplay. This is truly a fascinating game with the nearly endless combinations available in the demon fusion system, and is definitely worth playing.
Pros:
- Creative Demon Fusion System
- Hardcore dungeon crawler
- Somewhat approachable for new gamers
Cons:
- Very simplistic exploration system
- Story isn’t very strong
