Shaun White Skateboarding

In a dark and gray world, only one person can bring joy and color back to it. The famous skate boarder, Shaun White, has been locked up by a totalitarian government, and it’s up to you to free him by—skateboarding? Regardless of whether it makes sense or not, this is the premise of Shaun White Skateboarding, a game with very little Shaun White actually in it. To restore color, you need to land awesome tricks on your skateboard. Each time you successfully land a trick, the color is restored in an awesome visual exploding from your skateboard. Do this for the entire city, and the color is restored.

Tedious and repetitive

While restoring color looks amazing the first time you do it, it’s not so cool after you’ve landed hundreds or even thousands of tricks. The rails you are supposed to shape yourself to perform the tricks on also have a defined end point, so while it might feel like you’re doing something independently—you really only have one choice. Add onto this the cheesy, one dementional characters there to flesh out the world and at best you will get a laugh or two, and nothing more.

It doesn’t help that each objective seems to be as boring as possible, including objectives such as clearing pigeons off of amusement park rides. Even Shaun White Snowboarding had better objectives, and all you had to do was move from Point A to Point B while staying upright on your snowboard.

So-so graphics

Although the visuals aren’t the worst, they’re also not great either. There’s very little detail in it, whether you are looking at another character or the world itself. Even your own character isn’t well detailed, and could really benefit from some more effort from the graphics team.

Not always a skateboarding game

Another baffling switch that happens in the game is when it suddenly goes from a skateboarding game to a puzzle platformer. Instead of freely moving around skating as you wish, you must set up rails in very specific ways to achieve objectives. You can’t proceed until these objectives are completed, forcing you to keep tinkering with railing to make it farther in the game.

Multiplayer fun but empty

Multiplayer provides some relief to the disappointing singleplayer mode—if you can ever find anyone to play with. While multiplayer is refreshingly lag free and the gameplay is solid. Unfortunately, no one ever plays so you’ll have to bring your own friends if you want to try it.

5

Shaun White Skateboarding leaves a lot to be desired. While there are elements of fun to the game, the developers made no effort to see these through. The result is a dull game that falls flat on almost every possible level. If you’re a serious Shaun White fan, you’ll likely have more fun playing Shaun White Snowboarding—a game that at least lets you see Shaun White more.

Pros:

  • Multiplayer is fun

Cons:

  • Disappointing graphics
  • Extremely tedious gameplay
  • One dimensional characters
