Scribblenauts Unlimited

As the fourth game in the series, Scribblenauts Unlimited was pretty popular when it was first released. This game would be released on the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Wii U, and of course, PC as well. By the time this game came around, people were asking for a radical change to the series and while that may not have happened, I think it is fair to say that if you liked what the series had done up to this point, you will probably enjoy what is on offer here.

Maxwell The Origin

One of the things that they did improve with this game was that they tried really hard to make it more cinematic. The game gives you more about Maxwell’s back story as you find out why he collects Starites. The actual game has a story that puts your sister in peril and it is pretty fun stuff and gives you a reason to be doing what you are doing and that is all you can really ask for.

The Big, Wide World!

Scribblenauts Unlimited features a much larger game world for you to enjoy than the previous games. Instead of just being based around “levels” like the other games were, this one has a large overworld where you can talk to characters, get missions, and find secrets. It is a pretty cool system and one that I feel helps make the overall game feel a bit more “epic” in terms of its overall scale.

Pure Charming

One of the things that really catches your eye about this series is the visuals. I would not say that this game looks loads better than what came before it, but that is by design. This game has its own kind of style and it is a style that people really seem to like. Things may be a tad more polished here, but it still has that charming style which you would want to see in a Scribblenauts.

Thinking, Thinking, Thinking

At its core I would say that Scribblenauts Unlimited is a puzzle game, the whole series is based around you figuring out a creative way to overcome a problem that is in front of you. Maxwell once again has the magic office supplies that he can use to create things to help him with a problem. You can bring in tons of stuff from animals, tanks, trees, people and more! It is just staggering the amount of stuff they have put into this game. This game also continues the trend of you being able to not just have something come in, but also give it a feature like putting wheels on something. You can also give people, animals, vehicles, or whatever statuses such as defensive or aggressive.

The game is stacked with ways for you to overcome a problem. One way that the game tries to improve on this is with the object editor. In theory, the world is limitless now with what you can create, but this is actually fairly limited and it is a feature that I felt never really came to anything and in all honesty, I never really tried to make things as I did not find it all that fun.

7.5

As someone who likes the series, I do think that Scribblenauts Unlimited is a solid entry in the series. It may not reinvent the wheel from the previous games, but it offered a fun experience and I liked the larger world and thought the more in-depth story was fun too. While I still think that the DC version of Scribblenauts is the best, this one is worth a try if you enjoy the series just do not expect anything radically new with it.

Pros:

  • I liked the information we got on Maxwell’s back story
  • Lots of stuff to make use of
  • I liked the new kind of open-world aspect of the game
  • It still has that Scribblenauts charm to it
  • Some of the puzzles are really challenging

Cons:

  • Not a great deal has changed in the core gameplay
  • The editor really does not work all that well
