Resident Evil Village: Shadow of Rose

The first – and probably only – piece of story DLC for the latest entry in Capcom's iconic zombie-killing saga is here with Resident Evil Village: Shadows of Rose. Set to be the last chapter for Ethan Winters, and most likely the first chapter for his daughter Rose, Shadows of Rose retains the same spirit that made Village such a delightfully frightening experience.

For many fans of the series, Shadows of Rose also marks a proper "return to form" for the newer entries in the franchise. Ditching the first-person approach of Village in favor of a Resident Evil 4-like third-person perspective might sound risky, but the result is something that long-time fans of the series will surely love.

The End of an Era

The events of Resident Evil Village were a proper sendoff for Ethan and his role in the Resident Evil series. However, as we soon find out in Shadows of Rose, the Megamycete is stronger than any other virus in the franchise's history.

Most of Shadows of Rose plays as a "Best Of" playlist comprised of some of the most memorable locations from Village. Most areas have been remixed, but there's a distinct feeling of "been there, done that" that's difficult to shake all through the expansion.

As an epilogue to Village, however, don't expect Shadows of Rose to expand much on the previous game's cryptic ending: the events of the DLC take place before the original game's epilogue, so there's essentially no new info here for die-hard fans of the series.

Just Right

One issue I had with some of the DLC for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is that much of it just seemed like a harder game mode for the base game. Things like Jack's 55th Birthday did little in the way of expanding the world of the series, even if it proved rewarding for players who loved RE7 for the gameplay.

Shadows of Rose, on the other hand, feels like a much more realized solo experience. The new combat mechanics centered around Rose's powers make the game more challenging, but not enough so as if to make it feel like it is impossible. I'm looking at you, Ethan Must Die.

Seems Familiar

As Rose explores many of the same locations from Village, players can expect to come across many reused assets from the base game. This is one of the most disappointing aspects of this expansion, as there are virtually no new characters introduced in the DLC.

It's also bad news for fans of Heisenberg and Moreau, as neither the factory nor the reservoir appears in the DLC. Still, the content is more than worth the price of admission, especially if you just can't get enough of the ongoing Resident Evil revival.

9.5

Resident Evil Village: Shadows of Rose delivers more of the same solid survival horror experience fans expect from this series, even if it reuses content that players have already seen before.

Pros

  • Challenging – but fair – gameplay
  • Third-person camera works great
  • Great horror visuals

Cons

  • Reuses most content from the base game
  • The story feels a bit inconsequential

Game Reviews

Promised its development since last year, finally, Capcom presented a first glimpse of what will be the DLC Resident Evil Village: Shadow of Rose, is how it will be known. This will address more of the events seen in Village, now having Rose as the protagonist.

It was at the Capcom Showcase that a video was shown of what this addition to the story will look like, with Rose having to return to the Village to understand more about her past, and encountering new and unexpected dangers. Shadows of Rose, the first DLC of the game that expands the base story of the original game, where we will be able to manage Rose sixteen years before the events we lived. But this will not be the only novelty presented by Capcom. But let’s talk about what’s Shadow of Rose all about.

About the game

The story of Shadows of Rose puts us in the shoes of Rose, the daughter of the protagonist of Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil 8 (Ethan Winters). Sixteen years have passed since the end of Village and now Rose is an adult who has to learn to handle the terrifying powers she lives with. To master them, Rose will enter the mind of the one who granted them to her, visiting a strange realm of illusions, dreams, and nightmares. The subconscious of the assaulted monster will defend itself by throwing us into the arms of different creatures and turning the scenery against us with all kinds of traps. Will we manage to strip Rose of her powers? Are they a curse or a blessing?

"This adventure is approached from a third-person perspective. There will be ammunition and medicine available in your scenarios, but they will be very limited," the company announced on the official Resident Evil 7: Biohazard Japan account. "Managing resources well will be more important than in the main story."

But there’s one more thing

As revealed, the option to enjoy Resident Evil: Village in third person will be added, as well as new characters for the Mercenaries mode. And yes, among the additions is the option to play as Lady Dimitrescu in Mercenaries. And when will we be able to enjoy all this? On October 28, 2022, the so-called Winter Expansion will be available, which will bring us all the aforementioned content, including the game's first DLC.

The Shadow of Rose DLC will be part of the Winter's Expansion that will be sold separately or within the Resident Evil Village Gold Edition, which will add other extras to the latest installment of the franchise.

Review: 9/10

This expansion adds to what was already an excellent title. If you already enjoyed Resident Evil Village, this will be another hit you need to play.

Capcom has had amazing success when it comes to all its recent games, and we still have the remake of Resident Evil 4 on the way. Shadow of Rose is a must-have for any fan, excellent compliment to the story.

Pros:

  • A good story
  • A lot of weapons
  • Good combat system

Cons:

  • It’s a little short
