The next chapter in the Resident Evil series comes to your Game Boy Color. You play S.T.A.R.S. operative Barry Burton on a mission to save Leon Kennedy and a survivor on a luxury cruise ship from zombies and other horrific creatures.
Resident Evil: Gaiden has two separate interfaces: Third person top view for exploring the ship, and first person for combat. The third person mode is pretty simple to get the hang of if you've played these types of games before. Walk around and pick up various items and use them in various places. The puzzles, if you will, are not difficult at all. If you're stuck just look at the in-game PDA item and it will tell you what to do next. Likewise you can get info on the various items you pick up and it will tell you exactly where to use the item. I was rather disappointed by this as it takes most of the problem solving out of the game. When you get near a zombie you can enter combat mode.
Entering combat mode is odd; it requires you first target the enemy with a hard-to-move cursor or you can run up to them but then there's a very good chance you'll take some damage. Once in combat mode the view turns to first person. Fighting is simple enough if you have good timing. There are a few different weapons you can use but I really didn't see much of a difference with any of them except that you have to be right next to the zombie to slash it with the knife. The biggest challenge comes in managing your ammo, which is scarce and depletes quickly. Ammo doesn't regenerate, but unfortunately, the enemies do, given time. When Capcom says this is a 'survival'? game, they aren't kidding. As you come across Leon and/or Lucia (the survivor) you can switch between characters and equip them with various weapons and armor. During combat you can control any character you like but if one dies it's game over.__
For a Game Boy Color game the graphics are nice. The characters, items, and backgrounds are rendered nicely but aren't trying to be so detail oriented that you have to squint to tell what you're trying to look at. Likewise they aren't so simple that it looks iconic either. The shadowing effects are great and help to hide some zombies around corners and such. The sounds aren't that bad, but the music does get annoying after a while. Overall this is actually a decent game and even though you may not care for horror games, this would be a good one to pick up as a rental and try for yourself.
