Psybadek

Just as the snowboarding craze erupts in gaming, Psygnosis bags serious air with Psybadek, which offers a fresh slant on the scene. Psybadek melds platform gaming with racing as the player zips through lush 3D worlds on a "hoverdek," a futuristic floating snowboard. Through 46 levels, you collect coins, beat bosses, and unlock secrets in a dash to the finish that's less about placing first and more about platform gaming along the lines of Crash Bandicoot.

Busting off stunts is a huge part of the game, and you'll have to learn combos (like in a fighting game) to pull them off. Each trick you land scores a power-up for wiping out the bad guys.. .or you can just fire off a Mario--style stomp. A manga-like flavor to the graphics infuses the game with a fresh, colorful look that's just the right feel for this unique title.

Game Reviews

If an exciting, fast-paced snowboarding joyride is what you crave, steer clear of Psybadek. This game tries so hard to be a hip action-platformer, but ends up being merely frustrating and annoying. Atop your hovering "dek," you'll have to literally jump through all kinds of hoops even' s to start playing--just getting into the game will scare most gamers away. Once you get going, you collect stars and power-ups as you slide through the games five zones.

The polygonal characters aren't much to look at, and navigation is difficult due to pop-up.The overly sensitive controls aren't intuitive, but the technofunk music sounds pretty cool. The bottom line: Psybadek is too annoying for novice gamers and just not entertaining for experts.

ProTips:

  • Take the time to realty line up your shots-you have to retrieve your weapon after each.
  • Spinning on the platform enables you to cap the most birds; but remember to duck away from the dive-bombing penguin.

Psygnosis.' other quirky game is a free-roaming, 3-D arcade adventure called PSYBADEK. In the game you fly around on a futuristic hover board (like the ones in the movie Back To The Future II).

The game takes place in over 32 levels, and has a Boss at the end of every fourth level, with mid-level Bosses cropping up to test you. Although you're not armed, you can pick up weapons from drop boxes scattered on the levels and tow them behind you until you need them. There's even a smart bomb which, when released, will chase the Bosses! To keep things interesting, the bosses in Ps'ybadek all have Kit points, so you can gradually break them down. At the end of every eight levels, you'll free one of your friends. They'll then give you their hover board which allows you to do more complex jumps on the next level.

The dynamics of the hover boards are amazing and could have been lifted straight out of one of the WipeOut titles.

While Psybadek isn't for everybody, the target audience is the mid-to late teenager who is into fast snowboarding games.

Psybadek takes place in five different themed zones of 10 levels. In each level, the player blazes around the screen on a hoverboard. The player is to collect power-ups while searching for secret levels, perform amazing stunts and avoid enemies with weapons like magnetic-mines, snowball and smart bombs and boomerangs.

Psybadek features a realtime 3-D platform that allows the player free-roaming capabilities of the various levels as well as some eye-catching stunts and air thrills many players may desire. Psybadek also features a unique blend of Japanimation for those characters who are incorporated with the background through all the stages.

Overview

The new hoverdek game from Psygnosis, Psybadek, is a 3-D boarding game with a little twist. Not only are you boarding through obstacle courses and jumps, but you're also up against a number of enemies that are out to get you. A hoverdek is basically like a futuristic snowboard that levitates above the ground, allowing you to float over any surface. While the basic scheme of the game is good, I felt that it was lacking in a number of areas.

Gameplay

Your mission is to move through the four different worlds as fast as you can, collecting as many stars as possible while avoiding the enemy penguins, the evil Krakken and his gang. Your friends have been taken captive and your goal is to set them free, as well as solving a few puzzles along the way. You can pick up special weapons and use them to defend yourself. There are also little side-missions and races that will keep your attention for a while, but they offer little challenge. This game is definitely geared towards a younger audience, which might appreciate it more than I did. It's pretty fun squashing the penguins and blasting them when you move into the penguin shooting gallery.

You move through each level by reaching the bonus target level and are given a world key if you reach the target score on all levels in that world. If you win all four world keys, there is a surprise that awaits you. I found that there was very little difference between gameplay in each world I moved through, but the 3D graphics were pretty good. The music is one of the better aspects of Psybadek and it will keep you grooving through the game.

The game makes good use of the analog joystick, which is a bit easier to control than the directional keypad. The dual-shock vibration feature also adds a bit of realism and feel to the game, yet I still felt as though something was missing. After a few hours of playing this game, I really didn't feel that motivated to continue.

One feature of the game that can rack up points quickly is the use of stunt options. However, I found the stunts difficult to master. It would probably take a few hours of practice to get the hang of them, but I didn't feel that I could catch enough air to really make much use of them. The game is strictly one-player, which I found to be disappointing as well. It might be a lot more fun to race against a live opponent or have someone else to play with as a teammate.

Psybadek is unique and somewhat amusing, but the characters themselves don't have much personality and the gameplay doesn't really keep you coming back for more.

Graphics

Psybadek makes good use of 3D imagery, yet the scenery and characters really don't have much in the way of detail. You have the choice of playing a male or female character (Xako or Mia), yet neither one has any real differences in abilities. I also found that the playing fields could have been a little larger. This game definitely doesn't break any new ground when it comes to graphics, but they did have a sense of humor when they made the trees in the background dance to the music. Just remember, it's not over until the fat lady sings (and she will, at the end of every game).

Bottom Line

If you are into boarding games, you might want to check this out, but I would recommend renting it first. For me, there was little challenge and I felt the game really lacked direction. It's cool if you like free-style cruising and don't really care about getting anywhere fast, but it's not a game that will knock your socks off by any means. Boarders are a different breed altogether and some just may enjoy this ride.
