14 years ago, Konami delighted us with Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 or World Soccer: Winning Eleven 8, one of the best soccer video games in history. PES 2008 was the first to take the step towards the new generation of consoles so we, the fans of this great franchise, were eager for this installment due to the new and improved graphical performance of the new consoles that year that would also be present in the PC version.

Remember the Glory

The premise of this game is very simple since it is a soccer video game or rather, a soccer simulator: use the best teams in the world to play and compete against your friends or opponents on the internet to become the best of all… because we all like to be the best, right? This game takes us back to one of the best years in soccer where our favorite childhood players continued to captivate us on a weekly basis. As these players captivated us fans, this game also captivates us for how truly original and unique it was.

Gameplay is Everything

Personally, I have always loved the style of play in this franchise. Its controls are very comfortable and the movement of the player feels very fluid regardless of whether you use a controller or the mouse and keyboard of the pc. It doesn’t matter if there are fast players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, Ronaldinho or Kaká, or heavier players like Trezeguet, Ballack, Van Nistelrooy or Luca Toni. Each player has a different style of play but comfort is not lost. The ease of passing, shooting, tackling and crosses make this a perfect game to get started in this type of simulator.

A Great Soundtrack

The music on PES 2008 is not easy to forget. The soundtrack is arguably one of the best in the PES series and is also a fan-favorite. My favorite one is the soundtrack of PES 2011 but this one is probably my second favorite. Songs like “22 Heroes”, “Eyes on You”, and “Go to the Goal” are my favorite tracks back in the day when I used to play this game a lot. The sad thing is that none of these songs are sung by a famous artist or singer, but despite that, it does not take away much of the quality of this soundtrack.

Pick you Game

PES 2008 brings us a variety of game modes: You have the exhibition match mode (a regular match) or penalty shootout, “Master League mode” where you choose a team and lead it through seasons by making transfers in this, the “World Tour mode” where you choose a team and complete missions that are given to you in each game, the network mode where you compete online with other people, and many other types of game.

It also brings us the edit mode where you can modify the players and/or teams since, unfortunately, unlike FIFA 08, in Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 not all teams are licensed and have completely different names.

Although the game clearly has its mistakes (not all teams are licensed and many important leagues from certain parts of the world do not appear, for example), I can consider this edition of Pro Evolution Soccer one of the best installments of the franchise, being a strong contender to FIFA 08, its direct rival at the time. As I said before, its controls are very comfortable, its soundtrack is great and its graphics were exquisite when we consider the time when it was created. Generally speaking, Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 was a very good game, but it wasn't as perfect as FIFA 2008 was.

Pros:

  • Easy to learn to play
  • Comfortable controls
  • Nice soundtrack
  • Improved graphics performance
  • Possibility to edit players and/or teams

Cons:

  • Many teams and leagues are not licensed or do not appear
  • Lack of online game modes
  • No known artists on the soundtrack
