Chills and thrills are a big part of horror games, and Poppy Playtime – Chapter 4 is taking things to the next level with this newest installment. Chapter four sees the main character, who previously worked at the factory, travel even deeper inside, searching for clues as to what happened there.
The latest chapter does not disappoint fans of the series, with a new villain being unveiled that may be the most terrifying yet.
Introducing the Doctor
If you’ve played previous installments of Poppy Playtime, you’ve likely heard the Doctor’s voice before. His voice can be heard on VHS and tape recordings hidden around the factory. It’s very clear from these tapes that the Doctor is not the nicest person.
In Chapter Four, it may be that we finally get to meet the Doctor, but how this plays out is still a mystery. The preview hints that the Doctor will not only make an appearance in the game, but he may be able to use the cameras.
This means the Doctor can see you at all times - an unsettling bit of knowledge in an already creepy game.
Other Dangerous Characters
The Doctor isn’t the only new character to appear in Chapter 4. A dark sheep can be seen in the trailer, as well as Yarnaby, a cute but highly dangerous toy prowling around the haunted Toy Factory.
Seth Belanger, co-founder and CCO of Mob Entertainment, promises that the lore will go deeper and the game will become even darker in this new chapter of the popular Poppy Playtime series.
Just like in past chapters, some characters will be friendly. Others will be deadly. It’s up to you to make smart decisions and survive the toy factory. If you liked the original Poppy Play Time and subsequent chapters, this one will likely thrill you even more.
Expect a More Dangerous Environment
Seth also mentioned that new characters and scarier story aren’t the only things you can expect from the latest chapter. The environment is also going to be scarier, with just exploring the toy factory enough to give you goosebumps.
The game paints a harsh ecosystem of toys evolving to consume other toys. Only the toughest, fiercest, and scariest toys survive.
This is part of what makes this world so dangerous, and oddly appealing, as we step into each heart-pounding chapter of the game.
Only Steam Release Announced
Poppy Playtime – Chapter 4 has only been promised as a Steam release so far. This is a bit different from past chapters, since Poppy Playtime, as well as chapter’s one and two, were released on Switch and X-Box as well.
While it’s possible releases for the 4th chapter will be announced later, right now Steam is the only choice for those who can’t wait to get their hands on the latest chapter.
Poppy Play Time has exploded in popularity since its inception, and for good reason. The game does a great job of balancing terror and story, for a perfect horror game that appeals to a broad range of people. If you like horror, or are a fan of the Poppy Playtime series, you will not want to miss this latest chapter.
Pros:
- Darker, scarier story
- Creepy, but beautiful music

Game Reviews
Ok, you may call me captain obvious here, but Poppy Playtime - Chapter 4 is a game that you will like if you already like the series. This is a direct continuation from the last chapter, and I think that this is more of the same. As I have really enjoyed this franchise so far, I came into this with pretty high hopes, and I was very entertained by what I experienced here. However, I do have to say that if this has not really caught your attention before, there is absolutely nothing for you in this fourth chapter at all that will change your mind.
Setting The Stage
One of the things that I like best about this series is the story, and Poppy Playtime - Chapter 4 follows on from what we have had before. Basically, we play the role of a guy who worked for this toy company, and many years after its doors had been closed, we get a weird message, asking us to return. When we return, we find a series of nightmarish toys that have come to life, a horrific entity known as the Prototype pulling the strings. If you are into horror and stuff like Bendy and the Ink Machine, you will love the lore and world building that this series does.
Digging Deeper
Poppy Playtime - Chapter 4 is the latest part of the chapter, and I do not want to go into spoilers here, but as we make our way further into the facility, we are met with new horrors and allies, and more secrets are revealed. The big thing here is the Prototype, which I will not go any further into, but there was a mind blowing reveal here that has made me very excited to see what comes next. If you have been enjoying the story of this series so far, I am sure you will be very happy with the way that things are going down by the end of this chapter.
One Hellish Threat At A Time
I will say that by this point, the gameplay of the series is pretty much set in stone, and Poppy Playtime - Chapter 4 is certainly more of the same, but if you are like me and have enjoyed this brand of first-person survival horror and puzzle solving, you will once again have a fun time here. The puzzles, I think, are the right balance of being tricky, requiring you to actually think, and fun, but none of them ever got to the point where I needed a guide, or I was starting to get frustrated. Speaking of frustration, one thing that the series is known for is bugs, and I do have to say that this one is once again pretty buggy. I had a few freezes when I was playing it, one causing me to have to fully shut down my PC. Some people have also reported weird bugs that have broken the game, forcing them to restart whole sections, but I did not encounter that.
Is That Rex’s Long Lost Cousin?
Much like the gameplay, Poppy Playtime - Chapter 4 has the same style as far as the presentation goes, and I love it. No spoilers here, but we have some great new experiments that want to hunt you down, as well as some new characters who may or may not be there to help you. My favorite is this strange looking dinosaur character who looks like Rex from the awesome Toy Story 3 video game. I love the horror vibes that the game has, and there are some super fun jump scares, and once again, the music and sound design are creepy as hell and help with the horror vibes.
As Poppy Playtime - Chapter 4 is the fourth entry in this survival horror series, you should know what you are in for by now. I would assume those who are willing to give this a try are already fans of the series, and there is more than enough to entertain you here. The stuff with the Prototype was fantastic and well worth the price of admission alone! Sure, I wish that these things were less buggy, but by this point, I cannot see that ever changing.
Pros:
- I loved the extra lore that was delivered here
- The Prototype is even more awesome
- I liked that the puzzles were fun to figure out
- This is more of the same, and that is a good thing
Cons:
- The typical Poppy Playtime bugs are here
- I do think it leaves as many questions as it does answers!
