By now we all know that Pokémon is one of the most popular franchises in the world. Video games have been one of the main pillars of this huge success of course. But this doesn't mean just the main games in the series are worthy of checking out. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team, the first installment in the Mystery Dungeon series. These Pokemon games are completely different from your average title in the series. So let's see what's up with this title.

About the game

The game starts up with a pretty basic series of questions, depending on how you answer these you'll get a different starter protagonist. We'll find that our protagonist has been transformed into a Pokémon. The answer to the questions determines which pokemon we'll get to play as.

We join a rescue team and we're supposed to help residents of different zones in danger. Tons of natural disasters have been taking place, and we're here to rescue the pokémon in danger.

As the story progresses we are going to find out why these disasters have been happening, and how these rescue teams work. And while saving Pokémon in danger and fighting foes are important, we'll also make progress discovering just what happened to us, and how we ended up being a pokémon.

A new take on the series

Unlike most games in the series that have us play as a pokémon trainer, this time we're going to be living the life of one of these amazing creatures. This spin-off was a double release. And while it's normal for pokémon games to release two different versions at the same time, they are always released in the same console.

They released the first Mystery Dungeon game for two different consoles at the same time. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team for the GameBoy Advance, and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team for the Nintendo DS. The DS was still in its early years and these two consoles got along pretty well.

Both versions of the game were pretty much identical. This wasn't great for the DS since it wasn't able to use more of the console's power. But it was amazing to see there two consoles delivering the same quality and game experience. You could argue that the DS version had the upper hand, thanks to all the ergonomic and hardware advantages the DS had. Even the controllers were a bit improved too, but with all that, they are still technically identical.

Review

The Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series had a great start with this title. This spin-off turned out great, interesting gameplay in an already great game world. A cute adventure in the colorful pokémon world, for the first time we get to talk with them and see how they live in nature. An overall must-play for every fan, even if you're not into these games, this can be an excellent entry point to the Pokémon world.

  • Graphics and visuals: This title presents a beautiful art direction, the world is colorful and looks pretty similar to the GBA Zelda titles. The sprites are cartoony and nice-looking in an overall beautiful game.

  • Gameplay: It's still a turn-based RPG but the combat is different, and the grid system is completely new. There are similar attacks and fight mechanics, and we get our own team of pokémon companions. We get to fight this time, and not just yell orders at our pokémon. The controls are not that responsive, but they are more comfortable in the DS version. Our team's AI isn't great, but our foes AI isn't perfect either.

  • Sound: The soundtrack is simply amazing. It's different from most pokémon games, it feels much more like an adventure game but still has that recognizable pokémon vibe to it. It's a nice and fresh breath of air for the franchise.

Game Reviews

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team is a strange side Pokémon game that was released on the Game Boy Advance all the way back in 2006. It is an interesting take on the world of Pokémon and as you actually play as a Pokémon it was a game (and the start of a series) that many people were excited about.

Half Man/Half Pokémon

The Pokémon games tend to have a fairly straight forward formula when it comes to their story. With this game, they have really changed things up. The game has you playing as a human, who after a disaster has lost their home and their memory…. Oh, and you are also turned into a Pokémon. The game gives you this little personality quiz at the start of the game and the answers you give will dictate what one of the ten Pokémon you get to play as. You do also get to pick a buddy as you play. Getting through the dungeon, helping others, getting new members on your team and discovering what happened to you is the goal of the game.

So Much To Do!

There is a ton of stuff to keep you busy in each of the dungeons which are random, that you encounter. You can do things like help a Pokémon, escort them, find something and so on. The game has man story missions, but there are also a ton of side missions for you to do as well. You are working towards getting rescue points for completing jobs which will increase the rank that your team has. It sounds kind of basic, but there is a lot here to keep you busy. It may get a bit repetitive, but I find it fun.

One thing you need to keep an eye on is food. You need to eat (just like in real life) so be sure to seek out food as you play. Finding food is key to not getting defeated and it is something I tend to overlook.

Pokémon Fight!!!

The battle system has been turned on its head. The game is still turn based, but it is also tactically based as well as you can move around. This adds a bit of depth to the gameplay and while I do not think it is overall as good as what the standard Pokémon games offer. I do like how they have changed it and I feel that it fits this style of Pokémon quite well. The enemy AI is pretty relentless and from quite early on so be prepared for that!

I liked what they have done with Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and the series in general. However, this first game is a little rough around the edges and does really rely on you being a big Pokémon fan in order to overlook some of the flaws that the game has. Getting to actually play as a Pokémon game in a big adventure like this is cool so if you are into Pokémon give this a try.

Final Score: 8/10

Pros:

  • I like how many Pokémon you can play as
  • Recruiting Pokémon is fun and addictive
  • The game actually lets you play as Pokémon
  • The dungeons are pretty big
  • Tons of jobs for you to complete

Cons:

  • The game is a little unbalanced with the difficulty of the AI
  • You really have to be big into Pokémon to get the most out of this
