On the Ball

Taito's On the Ball takes puzzle games along a twisting new course. You have to guide a blue orb out of a series of mazes. However, instead of moving the ball, you rotate the mazes.

ProTip: In the December Cellar on the Expert run, right out of the starting blocks you'll encounter a blocked passage. For the quickest time, smash your ball through the brown block on the lower right-hand corner.

SpinOff

In this hallucinatory brainteaser, you have an overhead view of the ball in the maze. The gorgeous background graphics are picturesque side-view scenes, such as cloud-studded blue skies, frosty snowflakes, and even deep space.

The game controls are primo. The game's "gravity" always pulls the blue ball down from the top of the screen to the bottom. In a race against time, you wind your ball down a series of paths by rotating the mazes to make the ball drop through the passageways. This game ain't as easy as it sounds. There are plenty of obstacles along the way, such as "X" Blocks and Time Down Blocks that knock precious seconds off your time limit. On the plus side, gain a few extra seconds by smashing a Time Brick or a Mystery Brick.

Ball Stoppers

On the Ball consists of four "Planes" (Training, Beginner, Expert, and Special), which can consist of up to 10 mazes each. Once you complete a Plane, you can get a password.

The graphics in this game are dizzyingly good. In fact, you'll probably get dizzy as all the elaborate, bright, and spacey backgrounds whirl around onscreen. The sounds also keep your head in the clouds with the jazzy music, squeaky eeks, and tinkly bounces.

The 500point circles may entice you, but stay dear. They make your ball ricochet, hindering your progress.

Bust a Move

If you're into intense action and challenge, you can roll right by this one. If you're a puzzle player who needs a relaxing teaser that also impresses the senses, get on the ball and pick up On the Ball.

In Special 4: Magician's Escape, it will seem as though you're blocked in. Push Button B to bust out

Game Reviews

Based on the arcade hit, Cameltry, On the Ball is a game of skill in which you must guide a bouncing ball through a radical rotating maze! Sound simple? Not! The timer is your constant threat to success and it does not help much when you hit a '-2 sec.' bumper! Four modes of play will challenge any opponent! Finish with time left over and it will be added to the next maze's time limit! Follow the arrows!

This is a brilliant combination of Marble Madness and Mode 7! The task of rolling the ball through a twirling maze is simple enough, but the rapid changes in the courses as well as the traps and pitfalls that must be expertly avoided, quickly tests the reflexes of even the best games! Totally addicting!

Another new and innovative game! This one takes the special abilities of the Super NES (Mode 7) and utilizes them to the max! The control is precise and the screen rotation is excellent. As such, the game caught, and held, my attention for a long time. It does get very difficult and the later screens are nearly impossible!

An excellent re-vamping of an arcade favorite. The rotation is flawless and really shows what Mode 7 can do. The gameplay is solid old-style gaming, simple yet extremely fun to play. The game is very addicting and the 2-player match is welcome. The game has plenty of levels and lasting playability not found in most carts.

If you are one of those people who live in constant fear of becoming addicted to a video game, watch out! On the Ball is nearly impossible to put down once you pick it up! The rotation can make you dizzy, and the challenge can make you sweat! Before you make an appointment to see a doctor, check out On the Ball!

Not Your Typical Ball Game

Here is a game unlike any you have ever seen coming to the Super NES! Based on an arcade game called Cameltry, On The Ball is a game of skill in which you must rotate the whole screen in order to roll the ball to reach the goal at the end of the maze. A timer will clock you as you progress, and when it reaches "0," the game ends. If you finish the round with time left over, the remaining time will be added to the next round. Huge amounts of obstacles will get in the way of you reaching the goal. Some items include bricks, timers, force fields, rocks, point blocks, jagged edges and more. There are ways to make the ball jump and increase in speed. The four modes that will challenge your abilities are Training, Beginner, Expert and Special. At the end of each mode, there will be a final round which will test your strategy skills to make it in the given time. If you finish a level with under 10 seconds to spare, you will go in a lucky chance slot machine round in which you can gain extra time for your next round.

Once the game ends, you can try to match numbers for more level time. With this combination of skill and puzzle action, you had better be on the ball!
